Rally Comes Up Short Friday At PK Park

Oregon made it a one-run game in the eighth and loaded the bases in the ninth but dropped a 5-4 game to Oregon State on Friday.
EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon baseball team jumped out to an early lead and won the late-inning battle as well, but No. 1 Oregon State used a three-run fifth inning to chase UO ace David Peterson and come away with a 5-4 victory Friday before 2,834 fans in PK Park.
The Ducks (26-20, 9-14 Pac-12) loaded the bases in the ninth inning, but the Beavers (40-4, 23-3) escaped the jam to clinch the conference title and give coach Pat Casey his 1,000th victory as a college coach.
"We knew that was part of the bargain," UO coach George Horton said as the Beavers celebrated their title on Oregon's field. "They created that opportunity, and they took advantage of it. Yeah, it's a hard pill to swallow, but they've had an excellent year, and they executed better than we did tonight."
How It Happened: Unlike in Thursday's series opener, the Ducks were able to strike a couple of early blows. Matthew Dyer looped a one-out double into the right-field corner in the first, and later scored on an OSU error. The Beavers tied it 1-1 in the second and went up a run in the third, but the Ducks retook the lead in the fourth when Gabe Matthews scored on a wild pitch and A.J. Balta's sacrifice fly plated Tim Susnara.

The lead didn't hold, however, on a rare night when Peterson battled to command the strike zone. He issued consecutive one-out walks in the fifth, and both runners scored on a double by Steven Kwan. A sacrifice fly two batters later brought Kwan home, and OSU led 5-3.
Oregon's bullpen was spectacular, with Brac Warren throwing a scoreless inning and Nelson pitching the final three. The freshman struck out six and allowed just one hit, keeping the Ducks in position to rally. They made it 5-4 in the eighth when Susnara's single scored Spencer Steer. But with runners at first and third with one out in the ninth, Dyer popped up an attempted safety squeeze bunt to first base, and though Steer was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Nelson struck out to end the game.
Stuck In A Funk: The Ducks lost their fifth straight game, four of which have been by a single run.
"They're in a funk," Horton said. "I'm all out of speeches. … We'll try to regroup and see if we can salvage one game tomorrow."
Lineup Notes: Susnara returned to the lineup after missing Thursday's game with an ankle injury suffered Tuesday at Portland. … Balta started in left field and Carson Breshears got the start at second base. They started in place of Taylor Travess and Morgan McCullough, respectively, both of whom appeared off the bench Friday. … Nelson has allowed one run in 7.2 innings out of the bullpen this season.
Up Next: The Ducks will send Matt Mercer (5-5, 2.93) go the hill in the series finale Saturday (7 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
