How it Happened: Through the first four holes, the Ducks carded seven birdies – four contributed by freshman No. 6 Norman Xiong – Pac-12 Freshman of the Year – and Yi, who were tied at second overall at 2-under. LSU (1), Virginia and Oregon (T2) began the day at five and four-under, respectively.
After holes seven through ten, Oregon took the lead at 9-under, while LSU was two strokes behind at 7-under. The Ducks and Tigers would flip flop however through nine, as a few late bogeys gave up UO's lead.
From holes 11 through 14, LSU held their lead (-9) as Virginia caught up to the Ducks to be tied for second at -4. Xiong was tied with Yi second overall at 3-under, while senior No. 1 Wyndham Clark – Pac-12 Player of the Year – and redshirt sophomore No. 68 Ryan Gronlund were 1-over and tied for 28th.
Though the Ducks saw some adversity with a tough triple bogey on the 16th hole, the team held strong and Yi would be the highest finisher of the lineup tied at third (-4). Clark and Xiong stayed together to tie for 11th at even par (72).
Gronlund finished just outside the top 30, tied for 32nd with a first round of 75 (+3). Freshman Kevin Geniza rounded out the Oregon lineup in a tie for 62 with an 8-over 80.
What it Means: Yi's first round of 68 is his second best opening round of the season (67, Western Intercollegiate – season and first round best).
Three Ducks are within the top 15 of the field after the first round: Yi (T3), Clark and Xiong (T11).
Oregon, 2017 Pac-12 champions and the defending national champions, needs to be within the top 5 of the field after the conclusion of the regional to advance to the NCAA championships. The top-five scores from the first round ranged between 276-292, with Oregon well within the window at 287.

Overall thoughts…
"We had a great round going and let it slip away a bit. But overall, it was solid."
Sophomore Edwin Yi –
Overall thoughts…
"I was very satisfied with the way I played today. I thought I played smart and aggressive at the same time. This is probably one of the longest courses we've played all year, and I just kept reminding myself to be committed to every shot and I did. As for the team, I thought we hung in there pretty well. Although we had a stretch of holes with bogeys and doubles, we all grinded and fought hard. We are all excited and ready to get back at it tomorrow! We'll be ready!"
Senior Wyndham Clark –
On where Oregon stands after the first round …
"Based on our scores and some other people's scores, it was a little challenging. I think we're in a good spot, so we're looking forward for tomorrow."
On the advantage LSU has playing the University Club …
"It's not too often, but a course like this, it definitely does because of the greens. They've played these greens and hit shots into them, so they know what to expect. It's a little bit tougher for us coming from Oregon and the weather and stuff like that, but at the same time, it's no excuse. They have a little bit of an advantage, but I still think we have a good shot."
On the balance of playing to win while also aiming for a top-five finish …
"It's a little different because most events you go into trying to win. We are, but at the same time, in the back of your mind you're like, 'Alright, we just have to get Top 5 and we just want to make it to nationals.' It's a fine balance of kind of monitoring your expectations, but at the same time you want to try to go out and win because if you fall just short you're still going to make it."
