
Reigning Champion Ducks Advance to NCAA Tournament

BATON ROUGE, La. – The No. 7 University of Oregon men's golf team secured a third-place finish at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional to officially punch their ticket to the NCAA Championships at the Rich Harvest Farms Golf Club in Sugar Grove, Ill. The Ducks will look to defend their national title May 26-31. Redshirt senior Wyndham Clark (72-70-71—213, -3), ranked No. 1 on the Golfstat rankings and Pac-12 Player of the Year, finished second overall, one stroke behind No. 2 Sam Burns (LSU) (65-72-75—212, -4).
Clark's finish marks his sixth top-two finish this season, and the eighth time he has finished in the top five in 12 events.
Freshman Norman Xiong finished within the top 10 in a five-way tie for seventh (72-75-72—219, +3). Sophomore Edwin Yi tied for 46th (68-77-84—229,+13), freshman Kevin Geniza finished 50th with a 14-over 230 (80-80-70), and redshirt sophomore Ryan Gronlund rounded out the Oregon lineup in a tie for 55th (75-79-78—232, +16).
Oregon will be joined by No. 6 LSU, No. 19 Duke, No. 18 Virginia and No. 42 Jacksonville as the top five to advance from the University Club.
The host Tigers (276-296-294—866) earned the top team spot after finishing 2-over, eight strokes ahead of Duke (291-288-295—874, +10) at second place. Following the Ducks for fourth was the Virginia Cavaliers (282-298-301—881, +17) and the Jacksonville Dolphins (294-300-289—883, +19) were the fifth team to advance after winning a tiebreak with Northwestern.
Behind Burns and Clark – the only two players to finish under par - there was a three-way tied for third place between Alex Smalley (Duke) (71-71-74—2616), No. 47 Luis Gagne (LSU) (72-73-71—216), and Chandler Eaton (Duke) (74-69-73—216) all at even par.
Mason Overstreet of Arkansas was the Baton Rouge regional individual top finish, and will also advance to the NCAA Championships.
How it Happened: The begin the third and final round, the Ducks were in fourth at +12, two strokes ahead of Northwestern and eight behind third-place Virginia. Geniza had a nice start with back-to-back birdies on the second and third holes, following it up with even par on the fourth.
On holes four through seven, Clark was at 3-under and held second place overall. Yi followed Clark as the second highest Duck at 3-over and tied for 13th.
After making the turn, the Ducks shaved off two strokes from their total to be at +10, four stroked behind Duke in third place. Burns led Clark and Jimmy Stanger (Virginia) by five strokes to remain in first place. Three Ducks were also within the top 20 with Clark tied for second, Xiong tied for tenth and Yi was tied for 16th.
After losing a stroke and falling to fifth behind Northwestern, the Ducks still had a four-shot edge over Kentucky, looking to remain consistent and avoid a tiebreak situation.
Kentucky went on a birdie spree to close within three shots of Oregon and Northwestern, who were both at 14-over. Northwestern had a tough break with two bogeys, dropping them out of the top five.
With three holes to play, the Ducks were at 13-over and had a five shot edge over Jacksonville who was at 18-over. With a birdie on 18 by Clark, the Ducks officially sealed their advancement to the NCAA Championships.
What it Means: The Ducks will have a shot at defending their 2016 national title won last year at the Eugene Country Club with the No. 1 and No. 6 players in the country in the lineup in Clark and Xiong.
Clark's second-place finish is his sixth top-two placings this season, and eighth top-five finish in 12 events.
