Ducks to Face Familiar Foes in PK80 Invitational
05/31/17 | Men's Basketball
Oregon will open the tournament with UConn
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men's basketball team could see a lot of familiar faces when the Ducks head north for the PK80 Invitational this November in Portland.
"We are really excited for the opportunity to be a part of this event," said Oregon head coach Dana Altman. "Obviously, we have a lot of good teams in our bracket so every game will be a challenge."
The Ducks will open the tournament Nov. 23 against Connecticut – exactly one year to the day that Oregon defeated the Huskies 79-69 in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational consolation final.
The day after Thanksgiving, Oregon will face either Michigan State or Georgetown in Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Hoyas upset the Ducks 65-61 in the opening round of the 2016 Maui Invitational. The Ducks are 2-2 all-time versus the Hoyas, including an 82-75 victory in Camp Humphreys, South Korea to open the 2013-14 season.
Oregon is 2-1 all-time versus Michigan State, with all three meetings coming in the Far West Classic in Portland (1961, 1969, 1988).
The other half of the Ducks' "Victory" bracket includes the last two teams to defeat Oregon in the NCAA Tournament. North Carolina topped Oregon 77-76 in a 2017 national semifinal before going on to win the national title, while Oklahoma knocked the Ducks out of the 2016 NCAA Tournament with an 80-68 decision in the West Regional final.
The Tar Heels open he tournament with Portland, while Oklahoma will face Arkansas. The Ducks are 0-5 all-time against North Carolina, 2-1 versus Oklahoma, 0-3 against Arkansas and 49-9 all-time versus Portland.
The Ducks last played Arkansas Dec. 22, 1990, a 71-68 Razorback win at McArthur Court. Arkansas was ranked No. 2 nationally at the time is still the highest-ranked non-conference team to play in Eugene. Oregon last saw Portland Dec. 20, 2008 (Oregon, 79-76 (ot)).
The eight teams in the "Motion" bracket are Butler, Duke, Florida, Gonzaga, Ohio State, Portland State, Stanford and Texas. Due to NCAA rules, the two brackets will not play each other.
"When you think about all that Penny and Phil Knight have done for these schools, and how grateful we all are to have their support and generosity, this tournament is really a special way to honor them, and showcase college basketball in the state of Oregon," said Altman.
After the first and second games on Nov. 23-24, teams will take a day off on Saturday, Nov. 25, before the tournament concludes with the championship round on Nov. 26.
Game times and television information will be announced at a later date.
