Pullman, Wash. – Oregon broke open game one with late runs to win 8-2 at Washington State, but the Cougars responded with a walk-off 2-1 win in the nightcap to split the doubleheader at Bailey-Brayton Field on Saturday.
Game 1: Oregon 8, Washington State 2
David Peterson set a new Oregon single-season strikeout record fanning 10 to run his season total to 117, while allowing just two runs in seven innings. Taylor Travess helped Peterson get the win breaking a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh with a solo home run. Oregon would add five more runs over the final three innings for the win.
How it Happened: Six unanswered runs helped Peterson move to 10-2 and give Oregon a win. Travess sparked the rally with his first career home run in the seventh. The Ducks added another run in the inning on an RBI single by Jake Bennett to score Morgan McCullough, who followed Travess' homer with a double.
Oregon put the game away in the ninth with four more runs. Bennett pushed the lead to three with an RBI single scoring A.J. Balta, who led off the inning with a pinch hit single. Spencer Steer followed with a two-RBI base hit scoring Travess and McCullough, before Carson Breshears knocked in Bennett with the games' final run.
Travess gave Oregon the early lead in the second with an RBI single scoring Ryne Nelson, who reached on a throwing error by Washington State third baseman Shane Matheny.
The Ducks manufactured a run in the third to extend the lead to 2-0. With two outs and runners on the corners, Matthew Dyer intentionally got in a rundown between first and second allowing Gabe Matthews to score on a throwing error by James Rudkin.
The Cougars tied it in the fourth getting two runs on four hits against Peterson.
Game One Box Score Notes: Peterson broke Tyler Anderson's single-season strikeout record of 114 set in 2011 … He also tied Anderson for the most-double digit strikeout games in a season with his sixth … Peterson gave Oregon his ninth quality start of the season … Travess finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored … He had his third multi-hit and second multi-RBI game of the season … Bennett was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored … Breshears' RBI was just his second of the season and came after he entered the game as a defensive replacement … Closer Kenyon Yovan entered the game in the eighth with the Ducks up 4-2, but was replaced in the ninth after Oregon scored its ninth inning runs … Brac Warren pitched a scoreless ninth.
Game 2: Washington State 2, Oregon 1
Matt Mercer was spectacular, but the Ducks couldn't manage any offense and the Cougars came away with the split of the doubleheader.
How it Happened: J.J. Hancock singled to left field with the outfield drawn in to give the Cougars the win. The Cougars got a double from Matheny and a single from James Rudkin to put runners on the corners to set up the winning run.
Mercer (5-5) took the loss despite shutting down the Cougars' offense for most of the game. He gave up a leadoff double to Andres Alvarez who scored on a ground out after moving to third on a sacrifice bunt. After the Alvarez double, Mercer retired the next 21 batters without giving up a hit or walk.
WSU loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth, but Mercer battled out of it without giving up any runs. He struck out Cory Meyer for the first out and then got Danny Sinatro to ground into a fielder's choice for the second out. He finished the inning getting Andres Alvarez to fly out to center field.
The Ducks had a chance to take the lead in the top of the ninth, but Sinatro made a diving catch to rob Daniel Patzlaff's of extra bases with a runner on second.
Game Two Box Score Notes: Mercer made his first quality start since March 25 … It was his sixth quality start of the season … Mercer allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk … Kasser had two of Oregon's four hits … He was 2-for-3 … Matthews and McCullough had Oregon's other two hits.
