DURHAM, N.C. – Norman Xiong turned the momentum he built with his stellar play over the summer into a season-opening win in the Rod Myers Invitational at Duke University Golf Club Sunday.
As a team, Oregon finished in fourth place at 10-under par shooting 2-over par in the final round, finishing 19 shots behind tournament winner Wake Forest.
How It Happened: Xiong closed with a one-under par 71 to clinch a share of medalist honors with Wake Forest's Will Zalatoris. It was the second win of Xiong's college career after he also shared the individual title at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate as a freshman.
Paired together for the final round, Zalatoris trimmed Xiong's lead to one after a 4-under par 32 on the front nine and took the outright lead with a birdie on the 14th hole. Xiong made par on the 15th hole while Zalatoris made bogey before the two traded pars over the final three holes to finish in a tie atop the individual leaderboard.
Sam Foust had the low round of the day for Oregon, shooting a 2-under par 70 to finish T21 for the weekend at even par. Foust birdied all four par fives and shot a 2-under 34 on the back nine.
Thomas Mulligan carded a 2-over par 74 and finished his first collegiate tournament T65 while Ryan Gronlund and Edwin Yi both shot 75 in the final round.
Kevin Geniza had an up and down final round, shooting a 2-over 74 to finish T37 and 6-over par for the weekend competing as an individual.

On Xiong's win…
"Norman (Xiong) played beautifully and got a tremendous victory today. The other guys battled but didn't play their best."
On improvements to make as a team…
"We need to tidy up our short games and putt better. When we do that we will be a good team."
Notable: Xiong finished with his lowest score to par in a single tournament at 12-under, topping his previous best of 11-under at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate … Foust matched his career low round of 70 and had his highest career finish in a tournament.
Up Next: The Ducks will begin play in the Trinity Forest Invitational in Dallas, Texas on Sunday, Sept. 24 at Trinity Forest Golf Club.
