Ducks Drop Civil War Decision, 76-64
01/05/18 | Men's Basketball
Oregon continues to try and jell with a new-look roster and couldn't find the right formula Friday night in Corvallis.
CORVALLIS — The Oregon men's basketball team shot just 36.2 percent and gave up 52.8 percent shooting to Oregon State as the Beavers took round one of this year's Civil War series, 76-64, on Friday in Gill Coliseum. The teams meet again Jan. 27 in Matthew Knight Arena.
How It Happened: The Ducks (11-5, 1-2 Pac-12) trailed 30-29 at the half, staying within a point of their rivals on the road despite shooting 31.4 percent and getting just 13 combined minutes from Payton Pritchard and Kenny Wooten due to two fouls apiece. OSU led 40-36 when Pritchard scored his first points of the game, 5:57 into the second half, and his three-pointer contributed to five straight for the Ducks that got them back within two, 45-43.
After a timeout, the Ducks forced a turnover and Victor Bailey Jr. had a fastbreak layin, but he tried to finesse it past an OSU defender and missed. Instead of scoring to tie the game, the Ducks saw Tres Tinkle make a three at the other end, sparking a 12-1 run for the Beavers that proved critical. Pritchard made two free throws to briefly get Oregon back within 10 at 63-53, but the Ducks couldn't string together enough stops or scores to close the gap further.
Early on the Ducks had a 5-2 lead before the Beavers scored on five straight possessions to go up 14-10. Paul White came off the bench and completed an and-one followed by a three-pointer to put Oregon up, 19-18. The Beavers scored five straight to retake the lead, Oregon answered with a 6-0 run capped by a MiKyle McIntosh slam on an alley-oop, and White closed the half with a layup to keep it a one-possession game.
Who Stood Out: White scored 16 to lead the Ducks, 13 of those in the first half after entering in reserve. He also had six rebounds and a team-high five assists. Bailey continued to show some flashes, adding 11 points. Troy Brown Jr. had seven points and a game-high eight rebounds.
What It Means: After a week of expressing their intent to go inside offensively, the Ducks too often relied on the three-point shot Friday, and didn't match OSU's intensity on the defensive end. The process of trying to get this new-look roster to jell continues, much later than UO coach Dana Altman had hoped.
Quotable:
Head coach Dana Altman
"They just outworked us; there's no other way to put it. We've got a lot of work to do. … We're making some of the same mistakes we made in the second, third game of the season. Ball movement, blockouts, poor execution — we just haven't made the improvement I thought we would."
Junior forward Paul White
"The way we've been losing, we feel like we've been letting games slip away from us and not putting our best foot forth. It hurts. … We just need to find our identity."
Freshman wing Victor Bailey Jr.
"They just looked a little more comfortable down the stretch. They were a little more together, and they fought harder."
Up Next: The Ducks remain on the road next weekend, beginning at Arizona State on Thursday (7 p.m., FS1).
