Ducks Advance Four to Quarterfinals in Seattle
10/12/18 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The Ducks secured four quarterfinalists—two singles and two doubles—on a successful day two of the ITA Northwest Regional tournament in Seattle. After a doubles win over the No. 2 seed, Ty Gentry and Emmanuel Coste each advanced in the singles draw, as well.
Quarterfinals action in the doubles draw is scheduled for Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with singles play to follow at 1:30 p.m. A live stream of Saturday's quarterfinals can be watched HERE.
"I thought we played really well today," head coach Nils Schyllander said. "Ty and Emmanuel played doubles with great execution and energy. In singles, we moved two guys through which showed a lot of grit in those matches. Even in the couple of evening matches we lost, we fought our tails off and played some great tennis.
"I am pleased with the way we are playing right now. Fall is still young for us and we are definitely competing at a higher level than just a week ago."
The Ducks started the day with two wins in the doubles draw. Coste and Gentry posted an 8-6 upset of the tournament's No. 2-seeded team of Jacob Brumm and Yuta Kikuchi from Cal. Brumm and Kikuchi entered the regional tournament off a quarterfinal run at last weekend's ITA All-American.
Joshua Charlton and Thomas Laurent joined their teammates in the final group of eight with an 8-4 win over the UC Davis pair of David Goulak and Ivan Thamma. Laurent—with Cormac Clissold (2014-17)—is the defending ITA Northwest Regional doubles champion.
Oregon is looking to advance a doubles team to the regional final for a third-consecutive year.
In singles play, the Ducks won four of their five second-round matches including victories from Charlton, Coste and Gentry who were back on the court after doubles play. The fourth Oregon player into the round of 16 was sophomore Riki Oshima who had a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Cal's Bjorn Hoffman.
Playing for a spot in the quarterfinals, Coste rallied from a set down to be Piers Foley of Washington in the round of 16. Gentry registered a three-set win of his own to take down San Francisco's Nitzan Ricklis.
