Ducks Fall in Salt Lake City
10/14/18 | Women's Volleyball
SALT LAKE CITY – The 14th-ranked Oregon volleyball team saw its five-match road winning streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon with a 25-22, 25-18, 24-26, 25-23 loss to Utah in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
How it Happened: The Ducks (12-6, 5-3 Pac-12) scored the first three points of the match, but the Utes played their way to a 15-13 lead at the media timeout. Lauren Page pulled Oregon within one, 19-18, with a kill, but Utah scored three straight and four out of five to make it 23-19. The Ducks fought off a pair of set-points before Utah's Kennedi Evans ended the set with a solo block. Lindsey Vander Weide led the UO offense with seven kills in the opening game.
Utah led the second set from start to finish to take a 2-0 lead into intermission. The Ducks scored three straight to get within 12-9, but the Utes responded right away with four in a row to regain control before going on to win, 25-18.
The Ducks started the third set well, racing out to a 9-5 lead. Leading 16-14, the Utes scored four straight to take the lead, but Oregon regrouped with a timeout and came back with five in a row to lead 21-18. Utah answered with three straight to tie it up again, and Oregon punched right back with three out of four to earn set-point, 24-22. Utah tied it up with back-to-back points, but kills by Gill and Lindsey Vander Weide clinched the set for UO and sent the match to a fourth game.
Utah led 9-6 in the fourth before ripping off five straight to force the Ducks into a timeout. Oregon scored three straight to get within one, 20-19, and then scored four out of five to pull even, 23-23. Utah took a timeout with Oregon enjoying momentum, and the break paid dividends as the Ducks' next serve was in the net and the Utes followed with a block to end the match.
Who Stood Out: Vander Weide led all players with 19 kills, and Gill performed very well with 13 kills on .684 hitting. Ronika Stone also finished in double-digits with 10, Lauren Page put down six and August Raskie had five to go with 46 assists and 10 digs. Freshman Camryn Tastad shined at libero for the second straight match, leading the Ducks with 18 digs and multiple highlight-reel plays.
What it Means: The Ducks finish 3-1 on their four-match road stretch, a solid showing after coming off a pair of tough home losses to the Arizona schools. Oregon has shown impressive grit this season on the road, including Sunday while playing through some adversity, and will look to carry that back home next weekend against the Bay Area schools.
Notable: Raskie, who notched her first career triple-double Friday at Colorado, now leads the Ducks with nine double-doubles this season … Oregon is now 5-2 on the road this season … The Ducks were forced to play with six players for much of the match after Taylor Borup left with an injury midway through set two … Despite the loss, the Ducks hit .412 in the fourth set.
Up Next: The Ducks will return home to host California (Friday, 7 p.m.) and No. 2 Stanford (Sunday, 11 a.m.) next weekend in Matthew Knight Arena.
