No. 16 Ducks Sweep Cal in MKA
10/19/18 | Women's Volleyball
EUGENE, Ore. – The 16th-ranked Oregon volleyball team extended its winning streak against California to nine in a row on Friday night with a 25-12, 25-22, 25-22 sweep of the Golden Bears in front of 1,685 fans in Matthew Knight Arena.
The Ducks (13-6, 6-3 Pac-12) hit .368 and had four players finish with double-digit kills to pick up their eighth sweep of the season and third in conference play. Oregon kept pace in a crowded Pac-12 race with the win and built some momentum ahead of Sunday's showdown with No. 2 Stanford (11 a.m., ESPN2).
"I liked our energy tonight," said head coach Matt Ulmer. "I think we played pretty clean the whole night. I think Cal is playing with a lot of confidence right now, they've beaten some really good teams in conference and they've been really close against everyone else. Really happy to get this win against them."
How it Happened: The Ducks scored the first three points of the match and never looked back, racing out to a 13-4 advantage and leading by as much as 13 in a 25-12 first-set win. Oregon hit a whopping .417 in the set with just one attack error on 36 total attempts while holding Cal to a .105 clip with four blocks. Willow Johnson led the way with five kills in the frame on .500 hitting.
The Ducks took a 7-3 lead to start the second, but Cal rallied back to a 12-12 tie before taking a 15-14 lead at the media timeout. The Golden Bears used a 3-0 run to take a 19-17 lead, but Oregon responded with four out of five, including a successful challenge by Ulmer, to move ahead 21-20. A Cal kill made it a one-point game, 23-22, but kills by Ronika Stone and Lindsey Vander Weide ended the set and sent the Ducks into intermission with a 2-0 lead. Vander Weide, Stone and Brooke Van Sickle all had five kills in the set to pace the UO offense.
The Ducks led 13-10 in the third before scoring three straight to extend their lead to six points, their biggest lead of the set. Cal made it a two-point game, 16-14, with four in a row, but Stone and Vander Weide answered with back-to-back kills to force the Bears into a timeout. Cal used a 3-0 run late to pull within one, 23-22, but Stone took over on the final two points with a pair of kills to finish off the sweep for the Ducks.
What it Means: After playing with just six players for most of Sunday's match at Utah for a myriad of reasons, the Ducks returned almost to full strength on Friday and played with a ton of energy from the get-go. Oregon entered the night tied for third in the conference and kept pace before welcoming the first-place Cardinal to MKA on Sunday.
Who Stood Out: Stone hit .579 with 12 kills to tie for the team lead with Vander Weide, who added nine digs and an ace on her 21st birthday. Johnson had 10 kills on .400 hitting, and Van Sickle notched her first double-double with 10 kills (.381) and 12 digs. Lauren Page hit .500 with six kills, August Raskie added five to go with 36 assists and nine digs and Brooke Nuneviller shined defensively with a match-high 16 digs.

On the players who returned after sitting out last week…
"They were back in practice on Tuesday and looked pretty fresh to me, so I guess that was a perk of it. I thought Willow did a really nice job, Van Sickle had to hit for us because (Taylor) Borup is out with an ankle sprain, and Nuneviller looked fantastic. I thought we all looked very focus. I liked our maturity and I like where we're going, so I just want to see it continue."
On Sunday's matchup with Stanford…
"If their serving isn't great and they're having an off night, you've got a shot. If they serve really well, they're a really tough team to beat because they're so aggressive with their block. If you don't bring your A-game, you're going to find yourself in a really tough fight."
Notable: Vander Weide had 13 points to pass Katherine Fischer (2009-12) for sixth in Oregon history with 1,452 in her career … Stone added two block assists to raise her career total to 275 and move into a tie with Karen Waddington (2004-07) for No. 7 all-time at UO … Oregon improved to 12-0 when winning the first set, 11-0 when winning the first two sets and 12-1 when leading in attack percentage … The Ducks are now 7-2 at home this season … Van Sickle became the fifth Duck to earn a double-double this year.
Up Next: The Ducks will welcome No. 2 Stanford to MKA on Sunday for an 11 a.m. showdown on ESPN2.
