Ducks Sweep No. 17 UCLA in Pauley Pavilion
10/05/18 | Women's Volleyball
LOS ANGELES – The No. 20 Oregon volleyball team bounced back from a pair of tough losses in a big way on Friday night with a 25-21, 25-18, 25-23 sweep of No. 17 UCLA in front of 1,687 fans in Pauley Pavilion.
The Ducks (10-5, 3-2 Pac-12) led nearly the entire match to secure the program's first sweep over UCLA (7-5, 2-3 Pac-12) since 2014 and UO's first-ever sweep of the Bruins in Los Angeles. Junior transfer Taylor Borup took advantage of her first Pac-12 start, recording a season-high 13 kills and a career-high 16 digs to lead Oregon to the sweep.
"In practice this week we really emphasized playing Oregon volleyball," Borup told the Pac-12 Network following the win. "We were not satisfied with how we played last week, so I think the mentality we had coming into this weekend was just to play Oregon volleyball, and I think we did a good job."
"I thought Taylor Borup was fantastic," said head coach Matt Ulmer. "She was just so steady all night with a lot of big points and big kills.
"Really proud of us. UCLA is a good team, and beating any Pac-12 team on the road is a really good victory. A lot of good things tonight."
The Ducks scored the first four points of the second set, including back-to-back aces by Brooke Nuneviller, and jumped out to an 8-2 lead. UCLA cut the UO lead to 12-10 before back-to-back kills by Borup ignited an 11-4 Oregon run to put the set out of reach. Lauren Page, who earned her first start at middle blocker this season, was a big presence in the second game with three kills and two blocks.
After the Bruins took a 2-1 lead to start the third, Ronika Stone jumpstarted a run of seven straight Oregon points with back-to-back kills. UCLA played back to within one, 16-15, before kills by Borup and Lindsey Vander Weide started a 4-1 UO run to get the Ducks to the 20-point mark. The teams traded points before a Borup kill gave the Ducks match-point, and, after two UCLA points kept the Bruins alive, Borup secured the sweep with a back-row kill to wrap her best match to date as a Duck.
Who Stood Out: Borup notched her first career double-double to lead the way, Johnson and Vander Weide each had eight kills and Page put down seven on .417 hitting. Stone led Oregon with seven blocks to go with six kills, Raskie dished out 39 assists while adding five blocks and four kills, and Nuneviller was terrific defensively with a team-best 17 digs. The Ducks were big on the block with 12 total rejections while holding the Bruins to a .145 hitting percentage.
What it Means: After a disappointing weekend at home against the Arizona schools, the Ducks went on the road in a hostile environment and bounced back with as good a performance as they could have hoped for. In a loaded Pac-12 Conference, road wins over top-20 teams like UCLA will go a long way both towards Oregon's confidence and its postseason positioning.

"I thought Brooke Nuneviller was fantastic; I thought she had a rough time last weekend and to see her bring what she brought to the table to tonight was huge for her and huge for us. I thought August did a nice job with the offense, and I loved what Lauren Page was to bring."
Notable: Borup is the fourth Duck this season to record a double-double, joining Vander Weide (7), Raskie (7) and Stone (1) … Oregon is now 9-0 when winning the first set, 8-0 when winning the first two sets and 8-0 when holding its opponent under .200 hitting … The Ducks snapped a four-match losing streak against the Bruins … Oregon is now 3-4 this season against top-25 opponents.
