EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon softball head coach Melyssa Lombardi announced a second addition to the Ducks' 2019 pitching staff on Friday, signing left-handed pitcher Maddie MacGrandle.
Â
A Frisco, Texas, native, MacGrandle will be eligible to play immediately for Oregon as a sophomore after spending her freshman season at Texas A&M.
Â
"Maddie is a crafty lefty who does a great job of changing speeds and using the entire strike zone," said Lombardi. "She's a really tough competitor on the mound, and I also like that she can contribute offensively from the left side of the plate. I've known Maddie for a long time which I think will help her transition quickly, and I know that I am getting a quality young woman who can really help this program."
Â
"I met coach Lombardi when I was in eighth grade and have followed her success," said MacGrandle.
"I chose Oregon because I couldn't have picked a better coach to play for. I can't wait to be in Eugene helping the Ducks win games!"
Â
MacGrandle appeared in eight games, making seven starts, for Texas A&M in 2018, going 5-1 with a 2.60 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 35 innings. She allowed only five runs through the first 28.1 innings of her career (1.24 ERA), including a complete-game win against Iowa with six strikeouts. MacGrandle had success in her lone appearance against a Pac-12 foe, allowing just one run with six strikeouts across six innings in a 5-1 win over California. She excelled in the classroom as well during her freshman season, earning NFCA all-American scholar athlete honors.
Â
The No. 51 ranked player in FloSoftball's top 100 rankings for the class of 2017, MacGrandle enjoyed a dominant four-year career for Frisco High School. She was the 2016 Gatorade Texas softball player of the year and a consensus all-American as a junior, leading Frisco to the state tournament for the first time in 14 years while going 31-3 and pitching all but two innings all season. MacGrandle struck out 393 batters in 213 innings, and also shined offensively with 10 home runs and 57 RBIs while hitting .546.
Â
MacGrandle was the District 13-5A MVP and a first-team all-American as a senior in 2017 after going 18-7 with a 0.89 ERA and 281 strikeouts in 150 innings of work. The lefty also hit .440 with four homers and 25 RBIs, and finished a terrific academic career in the top 10 percent of her graduating class.
Â
As a sophomore, MacGrandle was named District 9-5A MVP, Dallas Morning News first team all-area and a FloSoftball second team all-American after striking out 293 in 175.1 innings. She burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2014, earning the District 9-5A newcomer of the year award.
Â
In travel ball, MacGrandle led Texas Glory Gold to the Triple Crown TX State Championship and a second-place showing in the 2017 CO Fireworks Super 48 tournament.
Â
MacGrandle will join junior Maggie Balint and sophomore Jordan Dail, a transfer from Virginia Tech, on the Ducks' pitching staff for the upcoming season. Oregon will open its first season under Lombardi on February 8 with a doubleheader against Kansas and Cal State Northridge at the Kajikawa Classis in Tempe, Ariz.Â
