THE BANDO BOUNCE
02/16/18 | Women's Basketball
EUGENE, Ore. – Lexi Bando hit a three-pointer with 46 seconds left in double overtime and the No. 9 ranked Oregon women's basketball team defeated USC, 80-74, on Friday night at Matthew Knight Arena.
Ruthy Hebard scored 27 points and went a perfect 12-for-12 from the field. Going back to last Friday's win at Washington, Hebard has now made 30 straight field goals, a new NCAA record.
The Ducks (24-4, 13-2 Pac-12) remain tied for first place in the Pac-12 standings with Stanford.
HOW IT HAPPENED: After USC jumped out to a 4-0 lead, the Ducks went on an 8-0 run to take control early. Ruthy Hebard was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field in the first quarter for 11 points. Oregon led USC, 21-12, going to the second.
The Ducks scored just five points in the second quarter, struggling to score both inside and out. Oregon and USC went into halftime tied, 26-26, as the Ducks shot just 2-of-13 in the second quarter. After scoring 11 points in the first quarter, Hebard did not score in the second.
During an 8-0 run for the Trojans, which gave them a 38-33 lead with 4:54 left in the third, the Ducks turned the ball over five times. Oregon turned up the aggressiveness on offense and turned USC fouls into a comeback. The Ducks went 8-for-8 at the line in the third and owned a 45-42 lead going to the fourth.
The two teams went back-and-forth in the fourth quarter but Kristen Simon hit a tip-in with 12 seconds left to tie the game at 62-62 and force overtime. The see-saw game continued in the first overtime period and once again the Ducks owned a two-point lead late. But USC's Sadie Edwards knocked down a runner with 24 seconds to tie the game up at 70-70 left to force a second overtime.
USC took a 74-73 lead in the second overtime with 2:52 left to play but Hebard hit a jumper to put the Ducks up one, 75-74. Bando then bounced a three-pointer off the rim, off the top of the backboard and in to give Oregon a 78-74 lead with just 46 seconds left. USC would not score again and the Ducks hit free throws to win, 80-74.
