02/16/18 | Women's Lacrosse
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon lacrosse team opened its 2018 season with a massive 15-5 victory over UC Davis Friday night.
How it Happened: UO's all-time assist leader, senior Cambi Cukar got the Ducks (1-0) on the board early in Friday's season opener, netting an unassisted shot to make it 1-0 at the 27:14 mark.
After missing the majority of the 2017 season due to injury, senior Natalie Modly made her presence known with a goal ashortly afterwards to extend UO's lead to 2-0.
The Aggies got on the board shortly after, netting two goals to cut Oregon's lead down to one, 3-2, with 19:42 left to play in the half.
It was all Oregon from there on out, as the Ducks proceeded to close out the period on a 6-0 run with three of UO's six goals scored by senior Jill Zubillaga.
Oregon outshot UC Davis 18-8 in the first half, with five different Ducks recording a goal to give UO a 9-2 lead over the Aggies.
In the second half, The Aggies' Kelsey DeJesus pulled one back for UC Davis quickly scoring an unassisted goal at the 28:49 mark.
The Ducks went on to put the game out of reach for the Aggies, ripping off the next five goals to lead 14-3 with just under 14 minutes left. Junior Shannon Williams and Louisville transfer Lexy Biller netted two goals each during UO's run.
UC Davis scored two more goals over the final minutes of the game, but could not get any closer as the Ducks clamped down defensively to earn the win.
Who Stood Out: Defender turned attacker, Jill Zubillaga finished the game with four goals tying her career single-game high … Shannon Williams also finished the game with four goals marking the ninth time she has recorded four or more goals in a game … Both Louisville transfers, Lexy Biller and goalkeeper Brittany Read, had major impacts for the Ducks in their first career games at UO … Biller finished the game with two goals while recording eight of Oregon's 12 draw controls … Read was a brick wall in the net for the Ducks making 11 saves, seven in the second half alone … Freshman Claire Domshick scored her first career goal at UO finishing the game with two shots and one ground ball.
Notable: Lexy Biller's eight draw controls was just two shy Oregon's single-game high of 10 set by Shannon Probst in 2014 … UO has now won their season-opener five years in a row.
Up Next: The Ducks won't have long to celebrate the win as they travel to West Linn, Ore., this Sunday to play No. 7 Syracuse at West Linn High School at 1 p.m. PT.
