Ducks Fend Off Late Charging Bears
02/23/18 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – In yet another heart-stopping match that came down to a deciding third set, the No. 17 Oregon women's tennis team managed to grind out a 4-3 victory over Baylor Friday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center.
How it Happened: With the Ducks (7-3) ahead 3-2 late in the match, and needing one more win to clinch the victory, Daniela Nasser and Julia Lilien headed into third sets at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, respectively.
The Bears' Camilla Abbate managed to tie the match, 3-3, picking up a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Nasser to put the match squarely on the shoulders of Lilien.
After dropping her opening set, 6-4, the Scottsdale, Ariz., native kept UO's hopes alive by forcing a third set. With her teammates cheering her on from the sidelines, Lilien took it to Baylor's Livia Kraus attacking the net to win the final set and clinch the victory for UO, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Before Lilien's late dramatics, the Ducks opened Friday's match by switching things up in doubles play, and getting some successful results from their three new pairings.
Senior Alyssa Tobita and sophomore Rifanty Kahfiani got UO going with a 6-4 win, before Shweta Sangwan and Julia Eshet clinched the point from the No. 1 position with a duplicate 6-4 score.
Up 1-0, Sangwan raced out to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Dominika Sujova in singles play to extend the Ducks lead. Baylor managed to get on the board shortly afterward, following a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot.
Both teams then proceeded to trade points as Tobita picked up a win, 6-4, 6-0, at the No. 1 position. Baylor's Jessica Hinojosa defeated Paiton Wagner at the No. 6 spot, 6-4, 6-3, to set the match up for an exciting ending.
Notable: With the win, Lilien has now won her last four straight singles matches to improve to 7-2 on the year … Lilien is also 4-0 in three set matches this season … Of the three home matches UO has had this year, the last two have come down to a third set with the match tied 3-3.

On the team pulling out difficult wins…
"It's toughness. It's something we have talked about for a while and it's something we talk about for our culture. I think the biggest thing for this group is that they are together and fighting every day. Whether that's in practice, in the weight room or in the classroom, they are really doing it the right way, and that's what I'm proud of. That they are representing not only each other and this program, but they are representing the University of Oregon in a first class fashion."
Freshman Julia Lilien
On clinching the match for Oregon…
"It felt amazing. The team pulled me through at the end of that match. I felt the energy really pick up from the rest of the team and it helped me get through that match right at the end."
Up Next: The Ducks are back in action this Sunday hosting Idaho at 12 p.m. PT.
