Bears Slip By Ducks In Close Meet
02/24/18 | Acrobatics & Tumbling
WACO, Texas – In a battle of the nation's best, the No. 2 Oregon acrobatics and tumbling team narrowly fell to No. 1 Baylor, 284.725-280.830, Saturday evening at the Ferrell Center.
Although the Ducks didn't win any events, the meet was extremely tight with Oregon tying or losing by less than 0.20 points in four of six events.
How it Happened: The Ducks (2-1) and Bears (4-0) showed why they were the top two teams in the NCATA putting up big scores in the compulsory event.
UO won the first two heats of the night recording the Ducks first 10 of the year in the pyramid heat, but Baylor answered right back with a 10 of its own in the toss heat. The Bears won the final two heats to edge out UO and win the event, 39.40-39.20.
The Bears extended their lead in the acro event getting 29.65 points out of a possible 30. Casi Jackson, Annelyse Robinson and Caroline Matos recorded UO's highest score in the event receiving a 9.95 in the six-element acro heat. That score marked the Ducks highest six-element heat score so far this season.
The Ducks kept it close in the pyramid event with Jackson, Robinson, Matos and Kaylee Nicklos recording the Ducks second 10 of the night in the open pyramid heat. The Bears just barely eked out the event win, 29.80-29.70, to lead 98.85-97.40 at the break.
In the toss event, seniors Nicklos, Alexis Cross and Kendall Green along with junior Tia Thomas and freshman Addie Lacewell scored a 9.95 in the open heat to close out the event. Their near-10 score secured a tie between the Ducks and Bears in event, 29.35-29.35.
Baylor closed out the match winning the tumbling event, 57.775-55.550, followed by a very close win in the team event, 98.75-98.53, to record the match victory.
Notable: The Ducks' 10 in the pyramid event marked the first perfect score for UO in the pyramid since facing Azusa Pacific on April, 4 2016 … It was also the first time UO recorded two 10s in one meet since that same meeting against APU in 2016 … UO recorded season-high scores in four events against Baylor, compulsory, pyramid, toss and team.
Up Next: The Ducks return to Matthew Knight Arena Sunday, Mar. 11, to take on Quinnipiac and Gannon in their only tri-meet of the season.
