Quinnipiac Edges Out Ducks In Tri-Meet
03/11/18 | Acrobatics & Tumbling
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon acrobatics and tumbling team could not quite stick the landing in Sunday afternoon's tri-meet, defeating No. 6 Gannon but falling to No. 4 Quinnipiac after dropping the final event of the night. Quinnipiac won the meet with a final score of 274.585 with UO recording a score of 272.230 followed by Gannon with a 271.930.
How it Happened: After going back-and-forth trading the lead with Quinnipiac throughout the first four events, the Ducks (3-2) won the tumbling event to retake the lead heading into the final event of the day, the team event.
UO tied or set season-highs in five of the six tumbling heats to win the event 57.00-55.325-54.750. Juniors Hannah Blair and Casi Jackson got the Ducks rolling with a 9.70 in the duo tumbling heat, with the Ducks recording a 9.70 or better in four heats.
Senior Taylor Galvin capped the event with a season-high 9.90 in the open tumbling event to help UO take a 181.70-180.625-177.75 lead over QU and GU heading into the final event.
The Ducks could not hang on for the win though recording a 90.53 in the team event, falling to both squads in the event, but edging out Gannon to take second place overall as the Bobcats finished with a meet score of 274.585.
It was noticeable at the onset of Sunday's meet that it would be a close battle as the Bobcats narrowly edged out Gannon and the Ducks in the compulsory event. The Ducks recorded back-to-back 9.80s in the pyramid and toss heats, but QU edged out UO, 37.80-37.70, in the event.
Oregon earned their first lead of the day winning the acro event thanks to back-to-back 9.85s in the six and seven element acro heats, but Quinnipiac countered winning the pyramid event to lead at the half.
All three teams were within a point and a half of each other following the third event with QU leading 96.40, followed by the Ducks with a total score of 95.85, and the Golden Knights rounding it out with a 95.10.
Coming out of halftime, Quinnipiac managed to maintain their lead by barely beating the Ducks 28.90-28.85 in the toss event, setting up the two teams for a dramatic finish.

On the loss...
"Something we talked about after the last meet and coming into this one was to make a lot of changes. Obviously we had a lot of positive changes in tumbling. And different pieces were better in the team event."
On the mindset going into a tri-meet...
"Our mindset is always to beat our scores and beat our execution from the last meet. For us it's really about executing our skills and seeing where those scores fall."
On the rest of the season...
"We are leaving for Hawaii to go against my former institution, Hawaii Pacific University. And then we have our senior night here against Baylor. Hopefully we can pack Matthew Knight Arena for the last meet of the season."
Up Next: Won takes the Ducks to her old stomping grounds, traveling to Hawai'i Pacific Monday, Mar. 26, at 10 p.m. PT.
