CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The No. 5 ranked Oregon softball team dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 11 ranked Tennessee on Saturday afternoon at the Mary Nutter Classic.
The Ducks (10-3) were held in check for the second straight games, after losing 3-1 to No. 6 Texas A&M in their second game on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Tennessee scored in the first inning on a RBI double by Meghan Gregg. After that, both teams' bats went quiet.
The Ducks struggled to get much going against Tennessee starter Matty Moss. Mia Camuso singled but didn't score in the second while Haley Cruse drew a walk but didn't score in the third.
Shannon Rhodes drew a leadoff walk in the fourth and moved to third on a two-out single and error. However, Rhodes was stranded at third after a groundout. Jenna Lilley lined a one-out single in the sixth but the Ducks couldn't push
her across the plate.
Camuso picked up her second hit of the game, a single to center, to start the seventh inning. After Tennessee made a pitching change and picked up two strikeouts, the Ducks were down to their final out. Freshman Mary Iakopo came in to pinch hit and lifted a fly ball to left where Tennessee made a diving catch to end the game.
IN THE CIRCLE: Maggie Balint took the loss after allowing one run on six hits in four innings with three strikeouts and no walks. Miranda Elish tossed the fifth and sixth innings, allowing no hits or walks with three strikeouts.
AT THE PLATE: Camuso went 2-for-2 and Jenna Lilley had a single as well but that was all the Ducks could muster against the Lady Vols...Oregon had three hits in the game while Tennessee had six.
UP NEXT: Oregon plays an exhibition game against the Japan national team at 5:30 PM.
