Victory In Home Opener Kicks Off Busy Week For Diamond Ducks
02/27/18 | Baseball
Oregon jumped on Seattle early and used impressive bullpen depth to win 14-0 on Tuesday, and hosts Florida Atlantic in a four-game series beginning Friday.
EUGENE, Ore. — The 10th season of Oregon baseball in PK Park began like most of the other nine Tuesday night, when the Ducks kicked off the 2018 home schedule with a victory over visiting Seattle, 14-0.
The Ducks (5-2) broke the game open with a 10-run second inning, and kicked off a busy week in outstanding form before hosting Florida Atlantic in a four-game series beginning Friday.
How It Happened: Sophomore third baseman Spencer Steer got his big night started in the first, reaching on an RBI double and later scoring in Oregon's three-run first inning. Steer then had a two-run single and scored during the Ducks' 10-run second, which tied the program record for runs in an inning set last season.
On the mound, freshman Cullen Kafka (below) started and threw three two-hit innings, striking out three with no walks. Five relievers helped complete the shutout, combining for seven more strikeouts with no walks, and the Ducks played error-free defense.

"That was a complete game," said UO coach George Horton, whose team won its fifth straight home opener to improve to 8-2 over the last 10 years. "They've got some scrappy guys, (but) the defensive part of the game got away from them, and we took advantage. Everything we hit found holes, and it kind of snowballed."
Death By 1,000 Cuts: Steer's first-inning double was Oregon's only extra-base hit on the night. The Ducks put up 14 runs on 14 hits, working 10 walks and taking advantage of five errors by Seattle (5-4).
"We had a lot of good at-bats early in the game," Steer said. "With runner's in scoring position, you've got to find a way to get guys in, any way you can."
Bullpen Depth Shines: Kafka was relieved by, in order, Peyton Fuller, Nico Tellache, Hunter Breault, Jesse Hobaica and Brett Walker. Fuller allowed a leadoff walk before striking out the side in the fourth, and Breault, Hobaica and Walker each threw a 1-2-3 inning to close out the game.
Tellache, a sophomore left-hander from Canby, worked out of trouble with a double-play ball to end the fifth, then retired Seattle's No. 4 and No. 5 hitters with two on and one out in the sixth. "He's really gotten better since January," Horton said. "He made some subtle improvements in the fall, but he's a guy now."
Up Next: The Ducks begin a four-game series with Florida Atlantic in PK Park on Friday at 6 p.m.
