Men's Tennis Dominant In 4-0 Victory Over Aggies
02/28/18 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men's tennis team picked up their third straight match sweep, downing Utah State 4-0 Wednesday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center.
How it Happened: Heading into the match, the Ducks (9-2) and the Aggies (7-4) looked to be evenly matched ranked No. 40 and No. 43, respectively, in the latest ITA rankings.
Not intimidated by the challenge, UO took it right to Utah State in doubles play.
Senior Cormac Clissold and junior Thomas Laurent blanked USU's Samuel Serrano and Valdemar Holm at the No. 2 position, 6-0 to open the match.
With UO leading on the remaining two doubles courts, Utah State attempted to mount a comeback, but Simon Stevens and Ty Gentry shut the door with a 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot to clinch the point for Oregon.
It was more of the same in singles play as Laurent and Akihiro Tanaka jumped out to decisive 6-1, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-3 victories, respectively, finishing moments after one another.
The match came down to Gentry and Ethan Young-Smith, who were both on the brink of winning their respective matches at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions.
In the end, Young-Smith secured the win for UO downing Jose Carvajal, 6-3, 6-2.
Notable: With the win, the Ducks remain undefeated at home with an 8-0 record … It also marks the second top 50 victory for UO, following Georgia State's appearance in the ITA rankings this past week at No. 45.
Quotable: Head Coach Nils Schyllander
On his thoughts about the match…
"I thought we played very well, all three doubles teams showed up. Last year we lost the doubles point to [Utah State] so this week we practiced a lot of doubles. I think across the board our focus and execution in singles was really good. I think it was a complete team match."
On Young-Smith getting the nod in singles play…
"You always know Ethan [Young-Smith] is going to bring the fight and the fire. He's practiced really and he deserved to be out there tonight."
Up Next: Oregon travels to Iowa this weekend for its final two matches before opening conference play. The Ducks will play Cornell Saturday, Mar. 3, at 10 a.m. PT, before squaring off against the host Hawkeyes Sunday at 9 a.m. PT.
