
Ducks Finish Eighth at Amer Ari Invitational

WAIKOLOA, Hawaii – Oregon closed out the Amer Ari Invitational at the Waikoloa Kings' Golf Course Saturday by shooting 4-under par as a team to finish in eighth place. Freshman Donald Kay finished with a 1-under par 71 to earn his first career top-10 finish while Norman Xiong shot a 2-under 70 and Ryan Gronlund turned in a 1-under 71 to help pace the Ducks.
How it Happened: Xiong began his round with a birdie on the par-5 fourth hole before giving a shot back a hole later. He bounced back from a 4-over par stretch between holes 10 and 12 with an eagle on the par-5 14th hole and birdies on holes 15 and 17 to get back under par for the day. After a bogey on 18, he made back-to-back birdies to finish 5 under for the tournament and in a tie for 26th.
Kay made his first bogey of the week on hole nine after starting his day with five consecutive pars. He then made three birdies and two bogeys over the next 10 holes before a birdie at the par-5 second got him back into the top 10 in the individual race.
Gronlund had an up-and-down day starting with a birdie on his opening hole but following a hole later with a double bogey to drop back to 1 over. Birdies at holes 12 and 16 came around a bogey at 15 and put him at even par for the day before a birdie at the par-5 fourth hole got him back into red figures for the round.
Edwin Yi played another consistent round with an even par 72 and Thomas Mulligan made six birdies, five bogeys and a triple bogey on the way to a 2-over 74. Teddy Oitzman turned in a 4-over par round of 76 playing as an individual.
Oklahoma State took home the team race finishing at 47-under par for the tournament, 17 shots clear of runner-up Texas Tech. Justin Suh of USC earned medalist honors, finishing with a one-shot victory at 13-under par.
