The Ducks lead the Cougars, 2-1, after day one of play and hope to finish strong on Tuesday
LAS VEGAS – The Oregon women's golf team took on Washington State in one singles match and two four-ball matches to kick off the 2018 spring
season on Monday at the Las Vegas Country Club.
The Ducks finished the first day on top, 2-1, and will face the Cougars again on Tuesday in five singles matches.
How It Happened: The Ducks beat the Cougars on the first day of the two-day event in Las Vegas behind a strong showing from their two freshmen, Alexis Phadungmartvorakul and Madi Daniel.
Phadungmartvorakul played in the only singles match of the day, and began the morning by going 1 up after the first hole. She went on to win her
match, 4 and 3, and score the first point of the day for the Ducks.
The duo of Daniel and Kathleen Scavo also secured a win in their four ball match. The pair overcame a 3-down deficit to eventually claim a 2 and 1 victory. Daniel had a phenomenal performance in her collegiate debut, carding two birdies on holes nine and ten to square the match. Both players hit clutch shots into a hard hole location on No. 17, helping them close out out their match.
Petra Salko and Amy Matsuoka battled hard throughout the match, but their competitors birdied both the 18th and 19th holes to win and
give the Cougars their only point on the day.
What It Means: The Ducks had some great moments throughout the day, especially from the freshmen, and hope to use that momentum to finish strong on Tuesday. Five points will be up for grabs on Tuesday with the five singles matches to determine the winner of the two-day event.
