Dominant First Half Propels Ducks To 14-6 Win Over ASU
03/16/18 | Women's Lacrosse
TEMPE, Ariz. – The veteran play of the Oregon women's lacrosse team was on display Friday night as the Ducks commanded both ends of the field in their first-ever game against Arizona State, defeating the Sun Devils 14-6.
How it Happened: the tone was set right out of the gates as senior Jill Zubillaga netted her first of four goals on the night just 32 seconds into the game.
Four more Ducks would find the back of the net as UO scored the next six goals to take a 7-0 lead over the next 19 minutes. Zubillaga finished the first half with a hat trick as seniors Natalie Modly and Mariah Gatti along with junior Shannon Williams and freshman Claire Domshick all found the back of the net during Oregon's run.
Almost more notable than the Ducks' offense was their first half defense.
Oregon played arguably one of their most well-balanced halves of the year so far, holding ASU scoreless for over 26 minutes while building its seven goal lead.
Brittany Read and the Duck defense held ASU to only eight shots on goal during the opening half, with Read making seven saves. The Ducks were sound in front of the net as the Sun Devils earned only one free position attempt throughout the first 30 minutes, which was saved by Read.
ASU managed to get on the board just before halftime as Taylor Carson broke the shutout with a goal to make it 7-1 at the half.
The Sun Devils caught UO napping at the start of the second half scoring just four seconds in, but the Ducks answered with back-to-back goals to push their lead to 9-2.
ASU attempted to mount a second half comeback, but the Ducks kept them at bay answering each Sun Devil goal with two of their own.
UO closed out the game outscoring Arizona State 7-5 in a much tighter second half, flirting with a 10 point lead throughout much of the final period.
Freshman Lillian Stump capped off the scoring for Oregon netting her first career goal to make it 14-4 with five minutes left in the game.
Who Stood Out: Zubillaga recorded her second straight game with four goals … Not to be outdone, Williams finished with four goals as well … The Bel Air, Md., native, has now earned at least three goals in all but one game for the Ducks … Senior goalkeeper Brittany Read recorded seven saves in the first half, finishing with 11 total saves to tie her season high … Cambi Cukar tied her season-high dishing out four assists.
Notable: The Ducks were very aggressive on the offensive end earning eight free position attempts, converting four for goals … This is the third time this season the Ducks have held their opponents to under 10 goals.
Up Next: The Ducks close out their road trip in Los Angeles taking on No. 12 USC Sunday at 12 p.m.
