03/31/18 | Men's Golf
SAN FRANCISCO – Sophomore Norman Xiong shot a 3-under 68 in the final round of The Goodwin to run away from the field for a six-shot victory Saturday at TPC Harding Park. It was the fourth win of the season for Xiong which sets a new program-record while he tied the career record for victories with his fifth.
Oregon as a team put on a strong showing against an elite field, finishing the tournament at 10 under and in fourth place.
How it Happened: Xiong got off to a great start, making birdie on the par-4 first hole before another birdie on hole five got him to 2 under on the day. He shot a 2-under 34 going out to sit at 14 under for the tournament and held a four-shot lead at the turn.
Xiong stayed steady over the next five holes to maintain a comfortable lead with just one mistake coming with a bogey on the par-4 13th hole. Back-to-back birdies on holes 15 and 16 widened his lead and allowed him to coast down the stretch with a pair of finishing pars.
Edwin Yi turned in his best round of the spring so far with a 1-under 70 to finish the tournament 4 over and tied for 47th. Yi shot a 2-under 34 on the front nine before coming home in 1-over 36, making an eagle on the par-4 15th hole to make up for a pair of bogeys on 11 and 12.
Thomas Mulligan got off to a red hot start, making birdie on his first two holes but ended the day with a 2-over 73 to finish tied for 47th at 4 over. Ryan Gronlund came in tied for 20th at 1 under for the tournament after shooting a 2-over 73 and Donald Kay shot a 4-over 75 and was tied for 88th.
