No. 21 Ducks Power Through Washington In Pac-12 Opener
03/09/18 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – What looked to be an even match heading into Friday afternoon's Pac-12 opener between the Oregon women's tennis team and Washington was anything but, as the Ducks flew by the Huskies, 5-2, on the UO outdoor courts.
How it Happened: Coming into today, the Ducks (10-3, 1-0) and Huskies have taken part in a pair of instant classics to open conference play the previous two seasons. The Ducks narrowly edged out Washington 4-3 each time, including last year's upset of then No. 25 UW.
Friday afternoon was not one of those matches.
The Ducks took it to the Huskies right out of the gates in doubles play. The duo of Alyssa Tobita and Rifanty Kahfiani picked up their fourth straight win nearly sweeping the UW pair of Katarina Kopcalic and Kenadi Hance, 6-1.
Nia Rose and Paiton Wagner finished the job at the No. 3 spot, 6-4, to give UO the 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
The Ducks kept their foot on the gas in singles play as Julia Eshet defeated Alexis Prokopuik, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot. Daniela Nasser followed suit with a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 5 spot to put the Ducks one win away from clinching the match.
With the matches at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 spot all getting ready to head into a third set, there appeared to be some commotion coming at the No. 6 spot.
Wagner, who trailed Washington's Kopcalic, 3-0 early in the first set rallied to win the opener, 7-5. The Cashmere, Wash. native found herself trailing by three games once again in the second set, but, just as before, the freshman flipped a switch winning the next six straight games to take the match, 7-5, 6-3, and clinch the victory for the Ducks.
Despite securing the match victory, UO played out the rest of the matches with Julia Lilien winning in three sets at the No. 3 spot.
Sangwan and Tobita fought their Washington counterparts every step of the way, but ultimately fell in a pair of close third sets.
Notable: With her win, Eshet is now 14-7 on the year and 3-0 at the No. 4 spot … The Ducks have now won their Pac-12 opener four years in a row … Tobita's match against No. 14 Stacey Fung marked her sixth ranked opponent in eight matches.
Up Next: The Ducks close out the weekend hosting Washington State Sunday at 11 a.m.
