Ducks Win USA Basketball 3-on-3 National Championship
04/24/18 | Women's Basketball
EUGENE, Ore. - Oregon's team of Sabrina Ionescu, Ruthy Hebard, Erin Boley and Oti Gildon took gold at the USA Basketball 3-on-3 national championship on April 22 at the Olympic Training Center.
The tournament served as a training camp for USA Basketball to get a look at players for potential selection to the FIBA 3-on-3 World Championships in the Philippines from June 8-12. The event uses FIBA 3-on-3 rules, with a 12-second shot clock and scoring by ones and twos up to 21 points, or a 10-minute time limit.
The Ducks were one of 12 different teams competing over the weekend. The favorite coming in to the tournament was likely team N.A.A.K, which was made up of Notre Dame's Aike Ogunbowale, Cal's Kristine Anigwe, UConn's Napheesa Collier and Louisville's Asia Durr, but it was the Ducks who went a perfect 8-0 at the event and took home the title.
The Ducks went 5-0 in prelims on Saturday, winning 22-17 over team N.A.A.K. in the opening game. The Ducks won 21-18 in their second game, 19-15, in their third game, 21-20 in their fourth game and 21-19 (OT) in their last game of prelims.
In the quarterfinals on Sunday, the Ducks defeated a team from Denver, 21-12, and took down a team from Arizona State in semifinals, 21-12, as well.
That set up a championship game appearance, with the Ducks winning big, 21-5, over a squad of former Temple, Liberty and Martin Methodist players. In the title game, Oregon owned a 12-5 lead and finished on a 9-0, capped by an Ionescu two-pointer, to win it. Boley had a team-high eight points in the championship game, coming on four two-pointers. Hebard scored six points in the title game, Gildon added four and Ionescu chipped in three. Ionescu was named tournament MVP.
"She really shot well," said Ionescu about Boley's championship game. "She shows that to us every day in practice and we all believe in her. We know she can shoot the ball really well. She was open and she made the shots that she should make. That definitely put us over the edge today and helped us a lot in these three medal games."
This weekend marked the seventh annual USA Basketball Women's 3x3 National Championships, which first were held in 2012. The Ducks competed in the event last year, with the team of Hebard, Gildon, Justine Hall and Lexi Bando finishing in second place.
