Ducks Advance To Semis Following Instant Classic Against Cal
04/26/18 | Men's Tennis
Ojai, Calif. – It was another heart-pounding thriller for the Oregon men's tennis team in their Pac-12 Tournament opener against Cal, but the Ducks pulled out an amazing 4-3 victory over the Golden Bears to advance to Friday's semifinals.
How it Happened: With the match tied 3-3, it came down to the final point for the Ducks (17-8, 5-5) for the fifth time this season.
The final four singles matches all went into a third set with Simon Stevens giving UO a 3-1 lead after downing J.T. Nishimura at the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
The Golden Bears won two of the remaining three matches, picking up wins at the No. 4 and No. 6 positions, to tie the match.
Almost poetically it came down to Thomas Laurent at the No. 1 spot. Laurent clinched UO's regular season win at Cal as well as the last match where the Ducks found themselves tied 3-3 at Utah.
After winning his opening set, Laurent attempted to close it out in straight sets, but fell in a tiebreaker set to No. 54 Billy Griffith. The French international would go on to defeat Griffith for the second-straight time, winning in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, to book the Ducks trip to the semifinals
Learning from their previous mistakes, the Ducks came out firing in doubles play to open the match, clinching the crucial opening point.
Armando Soemarno and Charles Roberts opened the gates for the Ducks, recording their first win as a tandem in a month, downing Cal's Paul Barretto and Ben Draper, 6-2.
After Cormac Clissold and Laurent fell to No. 32 Griffith and J.T. Nishimura at the No. 1 position, Stevens and Ty Gentry secured the point with a 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot.
Notable: The Ducks have now won two straight against Cal after previously going 0-35 against the Golden Bears … UO is now 3-2 this season in matches that come down to the final point.
Up Next: The Ducks will face the winner of UCLA and Arizona in the tournament semifinals Friday at 1 p.m. PT.
