Yovan's Blast Not Quite Enough

A day after being named Pac-12 pitcher of the week, Kenyon Yovan staked Oregon to a lead over OSU with a three-run homer Tuesday, but the Beavers rallied to win 4-3.
A day after being named Pac-12 pitcher of the week for his 15-strikeout performance Saturday against USC, Yovan blasted a two-out, three-run homer in the first inning Tuesday while serving as designated hitter. But Trevor Larnach answered with a solo shot to open the top of the second, opening the floodgates as OSU scored twice in the inning and twice more in the fourth.
"Probably the difference in the game is what they did after our home run, and what we did after their home run," UO coach George Horton said. "We couldn't muster up much offense."
How It Happened: Oregon starter James Acuna flashed a fastball with impressive cut in a 1-2-3 first inning, as the Ducks built off the momentum of their series-clinching win Sunday over the Trojans. In the bottom of the first, Jonny DeLuca reached on an error and Kyle Kasser was hit by a pitch; with two out, Yovan mashed his second homer of the season for a 3-0 lead off OSU starter Jordan Britton.
From there, the Beavers turned to Kevin Abel, who had allowed 18 earned runs in 28 1/3 innings this season. He allowed just one hit to the Ducks over 6 1/3 scoreless relief innings Tuesday, improving to 3-0 on the season.
"He was outstanding," Horton said. "Kept us off-balance. We didn't put much pressure on them after the home run."
Acuna, meanwhile, may have been rattled by the Larnach homer that led off the second. The next two batters walked, a one-out hit batsman loaded the bases, and another walk brought home a run to make it 3-2. In the fourth, another walk led off the inning, setting the stage for two more runs to score as OSU took a 4-3 lead.
Oregon's only other hit was a single by Gabe Matthews that put two on with one out in the fourth. Abel coaxed a double-play ball to end that threat, and the Beavers faced the minimum over the final five innings thanks in part to two Ducks who were caught stealing.
"We tried to steal a base and they threw us out, and tried to hit-and-run and they guessed right," Horton said. "Just trying to make something happen."
On To Irvine: The Ducks (21-21) now face a rare nonconference weekend deep in the heart of Pac-12 play. They open a three-game series Friday at UC Irvine, before hosting the Beavers for another midweek game next Tuesday.
"We blew an opportunity tonight to beat a good team, which would have been an RPI boost," Horton said. "That's what the next four games represent too."
On Deck: The Ducks face UC Irvine on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
