05/18/18 | Baseball
Los Angeles – UCLA used a couple of big innings to hand Oregon a 12-4 loss on Friday night in Pac-12 Conference baseball action at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Â
How it happened: Oregon (25-25, 11-14 Pac-12) jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning with a pair of unearned runs. Kenyon Yovan led off the inning with a base hit, moved to second on a Jonny DeLuca walk and then scored on a throwing error by UCLA second baseman Chase Strumpf. DeLuca moved to third on the error and came into score when Ray Soderman hit into a double play.
Â
UCLA (33-17, 16-9 Pac-12) rallied with four runs on five hits to take the lead in the third inning. Jeremy Ydens tied the game with a two-run triple before giving the Bruins the lead when he scored on a Kevin Kendall double. Michael Toglia singled in the fourth run of the inning.
Â
The Ducks came back to tie the game in the top of the sixth. Gabe Matthews came through with the big bases loaded two-run double scoring Kyle Kasser and Spencer Steer. Kasser started the rally reaching on a throwing error by UCLA shortstop Kevin Kendall. Steer followed with a bunt single before Yovan loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Â
Â
UCLA took control in the bottom half of the inning. The Bruins scored seven runs on just five hits. They started the inning reaching on back-to-back hit-by-pitches before scoring three of the seven runs on wild pitches.
Â
Duck notes: Jakob Goldfarb threw out a runner at home to end the third inning … The outfield assist was the 12th of Goldfarb's career, setting a new modern era Oregon record … Austin Grebeck (2014-16) held the old record of 11 … Goldfarb's assist was also the seventh of this season, which tied Aaron Jones (2011), Steven Packard (2010) and Curtis Raulinaitis (2009) for the most in a single-season at Oregon … Matthews' multi-RBI game was his sixth this season and the 10th of his career … Steer had his 11th multi-hit game of the season and the 26th of his career … Taylor Travess had his third multi-hit game while reaching base four times with two hits and two walks … Yovan (5-4) took the loss allowing seven runs on seven hits in five-plus innings with two walks and six strikeouts.
