EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 2 ranked Oregon softball team scored all five of its runs with two-outs and rallied back to beat Utah, 5-2, on Saturday to clinch the series at The Jane.
With the win, Oregon remains tied for first with No. 1 ranked UCLA, who defeated Cal, 2-1, earlier on Saturday. The Ducks (43-7, 17-3 Pac-12) go for the sweep of Utah tomorrow at 4 PM on senior day.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Ducks were held hitless until the fifth inning, when they faced a 2-0 deficit after the Utes took the lead on a two-run double in the top of the inning.
Mary Iakopo started the home half of the fifth with a single but was out on a fielder's choice in the next at-bat. Lauren Lindvall followed with a single to put runners at first and second with one out. Haley Cruse came up and singled but a play at the plate kept the Ducks from scoring as Mia Camuso was tagged out.
Still, the Ducks had runners at second and third after the play with two outs and Jenna Lilley coming to bat. The senior delivered, ripping a two-run single to right to tie the game. Later in the inning, after a Utah error allowed for the Ducks to load the bases, Gwen Svekis blooped a single to center and Oregon took a 4-2 lead.
In the sixth inning, Oregon added an insurance run, again with two outs on the board. Alexis Mack bounced a single to the shortstop with the bases loaded, allowing Iakopo to come home from third.
IN THE CIRCLE: Miranda Elish (18-1) started for the Ducks, allowing two runs on seven hits in a complete game with nine strikeouts and no walks. The sophomore started runners in scoring position in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Elish also had two at-bats in the game, picking up a single.
AT THE PLATE: The Ducks scratched together eight hits over the final three innings of the game. Cruse led the Ducks with a pair of singles at the No. 9 spot in the lineup. The sophomore is hitting .362 this season and a team-high .404 in Pac-12 play, with 21 hits in 19 games.
UP NEXT: The Ducks and Utes meet for the third and final game of the series at 4 PM on Sunday. It will be senior day as Oregon's four seniors - DJ Sanders, Gwen Svekis, Jenna Lilley and Lauren Lindvall - will be honored prior to first pitch.
