Ducks Hold Off UC Irvine to Win Series Finale

How it Happened: Oregon (22-23) struck first for the second day in a row, scoring a run in the top of the first. Jakob Goldfarb led off with a single up the middle, advanced to third on a Kyle Kasser single, and scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Steer.
The Anteaters (27-19) got the run back in the bottom of the first to tie the game at one. Jake Palmer was hit by a pitch before advancing to second on a balk, going to third on a groundout, and scoring on a Cole Kreuter single.
The Ducks took advantage of a pair of errors in the second inning to plate four runs on no hits. Kenyon Yovan came around to score on a Travess RBI fielder's choice before Nelson reached on an error to drive Gabe Matthews in from third. Goldfarb picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly and error on the center fielder which allowed Nelson to score from second, making it 5-1.
After a leadoff walk to start the fourth inning, UCI designated hitter Nick Anderson belted a two-run home run to left field, cutting the Oregon lead to 5-3.
Steer led off the top of the fifth inning with a double to left field, then scored from second on a sacrifice fly by Yovan to give the Ducks a 6-3 lead.
The Anteaters added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to trim the Oregon lead to one. Ryan Ftizpatrick hit a leadoff home run in the sixth and Konnor Zickefoose delivered an RBI single in the seventh.
Travess delivered a pair of insurance runs in the eighth with a one-out double down the left field line to make it 8-5. Nelson dropped down a squeeze bunt one batter later to score Ray Soderman, stretching the lead to 9-5. Steer belted a solo shot to left field in the ninth for his third long ball of the weekend to give the Ducks a five-run lead.
Steer Continues Success Against UCI Pitching: Steer finished the weekend 6-for-14 with three home runs, two doubles and eight RBI … In seven career games against the Anteaters, Steer has four home runs, 15 RBI and four doubles after driving in seven with a home run and two doubles in four games against UCI last year.
Box Score Notes: Yovan finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored … Travess went 1-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored … Oregon starter Kolby Somers (2-6) got his first win since March 10 against UC Davis, going five innings with three strikeouts while allowing three runs on five hits … Nelson pitched the final two innings and fanned four while giving up a hit and walking two … James Acuna struck out the only two batters he faced in the sixth inning to strand runners at second and third in a one-run game.
Duck Notes: Steer is the first Oregon player to hit a home run in three straight games since Scott Heineman April 13-16, 2013 in two games against Cal and one at Portland … He now has 20 career multiple-RBI games which is tied for fifth in program history with Aaron Jones (2011-12) … Kasser made his 140th career start, moving him into eighth place on Oregon's career list, passing A.J. Balta (2014-17) … Travess drove in a career-high three runs and recorded his fourth career multi-RBI game … Nelson had multiple RBI in a game for the second time this season … Since the start of last year, Oregon is 8-2 in the final game of a non-conference weekend, averaging 6.5 runs per game.
