5 Things To Know: Game 2
09/07/18 | Football
EUGENE, Ore. – Coming off a convincing 58-24 win over Bowling Green in its season opener last Saturday, No. 23 Oregon plays host to Portland State this Saturday inside Autzen Stadium.
The Ducks jumped up one spot in the Associated Press Top 25 to No. 23 and sit just outside the top 25 of the Amway Coaches Poll.
For the second straight week, Roxy Bernstein (play-by-play), Anthony Herron (analyst) and Lewis Johnson (reporter) will have the call on the Pac-12 Network. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:01 a.m.
5 Things To Know
1. For the seventh straight year, Oregon opened with a 50-point performance in its season opener last Saturday against Bowling Green. The 50-point game was the 38th by the Ducks since 2009, good for the most by any FBS program over that span. The only Pac-12 team to score 50 points in their first game of the season, the Ducks have scored 50-plus points in two straight games to open the season just once (2013) in program history.
2. Oregon's big play ability was on display in the season opener, as it scored four touchdowns on plays longer than 30 yards. Both of Jaylon Redd's receptions in the game went for TDs — he opened the scoring for the Ducks with a 33-yard grab on fourth down, and a closed the scoring for the day on a 48-yard score. Redd's two receiving TDs tied the program season opener record. Since the 2010 season, Oregon has 132 touchdowns of 30 yards or more, good for second in the nation behind Clemson (135).
3. Senior Ugochukwu Amadi's 38-yard interception return for a touchdown against Bowling Green extended Oregon's streak of scoring a defensive touchdown to three games, dating back to last year's Civil War win over Oregon State. During that stretch, the Ducks' defense has scored four touchdowns with two coming on interceptions and two coming on fumble recoveries. It marks the first time that Oregon has scored a defensive TD in three straight games since 2012; the Ducks have never scored a non-offensive TD in four consecutive contests.
4. Playing in just his 18th career game last Saturday against Bowling Green, junior Justin Herbert became just the second Oregon quarterback in history to toss five touchdown passes in a game while also rushing for a TD. Herbert joined Marcus Mariota, who threw five touchdowns and rushed for a pair of TDs against Colorado in a 57-16 win in Boulder on Oct. 5, 2013. Coincidentally, Mariota was playing in just his 18th game as well. Herbert went over 4,000 career passing yards last Saturday, and with one touchdown pass against Portland State would become the ninth player in program history with 40 TDs through the air.
5. Penei Sewell became the first Oregon true freshman to start on the offensive line in a season opener since Lee Gundy did so in 1997 against Arizona. Sewell was one of just nine true freshmen nationally to start on the offensive line in a season opener this year.
