Resounding Response By UO Men
01/13/19 | Men's Basketball
Oregon put a heartbreaking loss in the rear-view mirror by scorching the nets in an 81-60 win over USC on Sunday.
EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon men's basketball team showed no lingering effects from its heartbreaking loss three days earlier in an 81-60 victory over Southern California on Sunday before 8,148 fans in Matthew Knight Arena.
The Ducks had an extra day to shake off the overtime loss to UCLA, and head coach Dana Altman's team responded by shooting 56 percent overall and making 13-of-24 from three-point range to beat the Trojans.
"The very next day at our practice … the message (from Altman) was, things happen, and you have to move on," UO senior Paul White said. "One of the things he was driving home was, NBA guys deal with this all the time. Tough loss, you have to get right back on your horse and swing away. …"
"At the end of the day, I'm proud of my team, the way we responded."

How It Happened: The Ducks scored early andoften, with Louis King making a three on the game's opening possession and then Payton Pritchard and Paul White hitting back-to-back three-pointers for a 12-4 lead. Oregon endured a scoreless stretch of 4:40 after that but USC could only close within 12-9, after which the Ducks went on a 14-4 run capped by a three-point play from White.
The game got a little chippy late in the first half when USC's Bennie Boatwright scored and was fouled by King, with the senior barking in the face of the UO freshman after the play. Boatwright made the ensuing free throw, but King tipped in an offensive rebound at the other end, defended a missed three by Boatwright on USC's next trip, then made a three-pointer with Boatwright in his face to put Oregon up 33-21.
The Trojans scored the last seven points of the first half to get within 36-28, but the Ducks didn't let this lead slip away. A layin by Victor Bailey Jr. and a three-pointer by White to open the second half put Oregon up 41-28, and Bailey scored on consecutive trips to make it 48-33.
"We finished out better than we have in the past," Bailey said. "Just guys talking, keeping the energy up and staying focused."
Oregon then scored on six straight trips to extend the lead to 64-43, a run that included threes by King, Miles Norris, Will Richardson and Ehab Amin. By that point, seven different Ducks had hit a three-pointer in the game.

The Ducks' biggest lead came at 73-47, on a turnaround, fallaway baseline jumper by King. The game's flow broke down over the final 5 minutes, when Oregon committed six of its 31 turnovers in the game, but USC never got closer than 19 the rest of the way.
"We want to take this energy into Arizona and Arizona State," Bailey said of the Ducks' upcoming road trip. "Coach talked to us about keeping the energy up. A win like this is definitely good for us."
Who Stood Out: White matched his career high with 19 points, and King also scored 19 while grabbing eight rebounds and handling out six assists. Pritchard was 3-of-5 from three-point range for nine points, with five assists.

What It Means: The Ducks demonstrated resiliency and mental toughness to earn their first Pac-12 win of the season just three days after a crushing defeat to UCLA that featured a blown lead of 16 points.
Notable: Injured UO freshman Bol Bol was on the Oregon bench for the game, with a cast on the left foot he recently had surgically repaired. … King combined for 41 points, 18 rebounds and seven assists in his first full weekend of Pac-12 play. … Oregon ended a three-game losing streak to USC, the team that knocked the Ducks out of the 2018 conference tournament.
Up Next: The Ducks go on the road in conference play for the first time, at Arizona on Thursday (6 p.m., ESPN).
