EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon volleyball team bolstered its roster for the 2019 season on Saturday as head coach Matt Ulmer announced the addition of transfer middle blocker Abby Hansen.
A native of Phoenix, Ariz., Hansen will arrive at Oregon for the upcoming winter term and will be eligible to play for the Ducks in the fall as a redshirt freshman. Hansen, who did not play as a true freshman, spent the 2018 season at USC before deciding to transfer to Oregon.
"We couldn't be more excited that Abby has chosen to become a Duck," said Ulmer. "Abby brings size and strength to the middle blocker position, and she is capable of hitting a variety of attack routes as well as slowing down opposing middles. Her energy, personality and character will be fantastic additions to our program."
Hansen was the No. 70 ranked player in the nation on the 2018 PrepVolleyball.com Senior Aces list after a terrific career at Desert Vista High School in Phoenix. The 6'4" middle blocker was the 2017 team captain and MVP as a senior, earning a spot on the 6A Central Region second team, and she helped lead her team to the 2015 Arizona State championship as a sophomore while receiving Tempe All-City and Arizona All-Central region honorable mention honors.
Hansen thrived in the classroom as well at Desert Vista, working her way onto the 2017 all-academic first team. She was also a National Honors Society member and the president of the DVHS Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
In the club circuit, Hansen played seven years at Aspire Volleyball Club on the 18Rox and 17Rox squads. She helped lead her club to fifth place at the 2017 Girls' Junior National Championship and tournament victories at the Las Vegas qualifier, Minneapolis qualifier and Music City qualifier.
Hansen will join second-team all-American Ronika Stone, one of the nation's best as a junior in 2018, and Karson Bacon in the middle next season. Bacon, who Ulmer has called "the most physically gifted athlete this program has ever seen," will make her Duck debut in 2019 after redshirting her freshman season. Bacon is the third-highest ranked recruit in program history at No. 11 on the 2018 Senior Aces list, behind only Stone (No. 10, 2016) and setter Kylie Robinson (No. 8, 2018), who is also in line for significant playing time as a redshirt freshman.
