Ducks Lose in Four at Arizona
10/27/19 | Women's Volleyball
EUGENE, Ore. – Senior Ronika Stone finished one off her career high with 19 kills Sunday afternoon in the Ducks' four-set loss (25-21, 25-20, 19-25, 26-24) at Arizona. Fellow senior Willow Johnson added 13 kills and freshman setter Elise Ferreira had 24 assists and 10 digs for her second double-double of the season.
How It Happened: Midway through the opening set, Arizona (12-10, 2-8 Pac-12) used a 7-3 run to turn a one-point advantage into a 20-15 lead. The Ducks saved one match point with a solo block from redshirt freshman Karson Bacon but the home team got a kill to end the next rally and take the 1-0 match lead.
The Wildcats put together an early seven-point surge to go ahead 8-3 on the scoreboard. Oregon trailed for the remainder of the set but pulled to within two—UA leading 18-16—with a kill by Stone. The senior standout had 11 kills through the first two sets. However, Arizona scored the next three points to retake momentum and went on to win the set, 25-20.
After a back-and-forth start to the third—scored tied 10-all—Oregon (6-13, 2-8 Pac-12) rattled off 11 of the next 14 points to take a 21-13 lead on an overpass kill by redshirt freshman Abby Hansen. The home team got to within four late in the frame but Stone got a kill to give the Ducks set point. Oregon won the set, 25-19, when a UA attack landed out of bounds to end the next rally.
The Ducks trailed early in the fourth but responded with an 11-3 run, aided by four kills from Stone, to take a 19-13 advantage. Oregon maintained the six-point cushion at 22-16 before Arizona put on a late charge. The Wildcats scored 10 of the last 12 points of the match. Stone put down one last kill to save a match point but UA sealed the win with back-to-back kills by Paige Whipple.
Who Stood Out: Stone posted a .368 hitting percentage to go along with her 19 kills, a new high against a Pac-12 opponent. She had 18 kills against Washington State in 2017. Stone now has double-digit kills in 13 of 19 matches this season, and in six of 10 Pac-12 outings.
Sophomore Brooke Nuneviller had 11 digs and nine kills, and Bacon and Hansen each put up a match-high six total blocks.
Notable: With Sunday's defensive effort at the net, Stone is now tied for fifth on the program's career total blocks list (436). She and Neticia Enesi (2006-09) share that spot. On the all-time block assists list, Stone trails Enesi by four after the Arizona match.
Dating back to the 2013 season, 10 of the past 12 meetings between Oregon and Arizona have gone to at least four sets.
Up Next: The Ducks are back on the road next weekend with a trip to the Bay Area for matches against top-15 opponents Cal (Nov. 1) and Stanford (Nov. 3). Oregon return to Matthew Knight Arena on Nov. 7 to face Washington.
