Posts Overpowering In Opener
11/11/19 | Women's Basketball
Ruthy Hebard had 21 points and Lydia Giomi added 18 as Oregon relied on its inside game to beat Northeastern on Monday.
EUGENE, Ore. — The top-ranked Oregon women's basketball team opened its 2019-20 regular season with an 89-47 victory over Northeastern on Monday before 8,253 fans in Matthew Knight Arena, overcoming inconsistent outside shooting with a dominant performance in the post.
Senior Ruthy Hebard was 10-of-11 from the floor on the way to 21 points, and junior Lydia Giomi had a breakout game with 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting as the Ducks wore down the Huskies inside on the way to victory. Junior wing Satou Sabally was absent for the first of three games she'll miss while playing for the German national team, and Giomi took advantage of the available minutes, including in a look that featured both her and Hebard on the floor together.
"We usually have four really good shooters on the floor; when you go with the two bigs like that, you don't," UO coach Kelly Graves said. "But when they go 18-for-21 from the field, we'll take that any night. … It's something we make look to do a little bit more. I really liked that."
How It Happened: Two days removed from the emotional high of an exhibition win over the USA Basketball national team, Oregon perhaps predictably wasn't sharp from the outset Monday. The Ducks shot 3-of-14 from three-point range in the first period, finally getting some separation when Minyon Moore, Erin Boley and Hebard scored in the low block on consecutive possessions. That made it 13-4 midway through the quarter, though the lead was only 16-9 by the end of the period.

"There was a little bit of a hangover (from Sunday's win) in that first quarter," Graves said. "But they amped it up in the second quarter. I thought that was great."
Giomi opened the second by rebounding a miss and putting it back for her first points. That started a 16-0 run for Oregon to open the quarter, which included three field goals for Giomi and one by Hebard; after Northeastern ended the run with a bucket, Hebard quickly scored twice more for a 36-11 lead. A 7-0 run later in the period included the first collegiate basket for freshman Holly Winterburn, helping the Ducks to a 47-22 halftime lead.
Winterburn teamed with fellow freshman Jaz Shelley to push the lead past 30 in the third quarter. Shelley's first career basket was a three-pointer for a 58-26 lead, Winterburn followed with another three and Shelley made it three in a row on the next possession. Giomi had the final field goal of the third period, running the floor and taking a pass from Moore before finishing with a layin.

"I like to run," Giomi said. "I guess I take that as an advantage, because it's something I like to do. It's part of why I picked basketball as a sport."
Moore, the graduate transfer from USC, ended up with 10 assists in the game. In the fourth quarter, she had a crosscourt pass that set up Sabrina Ionescu for a three-pointer, and then fed Taylor Chavez in transition for an 80-45 lead. Moore scored herself on the next trip, her first three-pointer with the Ducks.
"Having teammates who can catch and finish, it's kind of easy" to get assists, Moore said. "I like to push the tempo."

Who Stood Out: Hebard's 21 points led the team, and she had 12 rebounds for her 40th career double-double. Giomi's career-high 18 points were accompanied by nine rebounds. Ionescu was briefly on triple-double watch, before finishing with 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Moore had nine points to go along with her 10 assists, plus six rebounds.
What It Means: The big storyline this week is how Oregon will account for the absence of Sabally. Chavez took Sabally's spot in the starting lineup, and had four points, three steals and three rebounds, but also four turnovers. Giomi made an emphatic statement about her ability to fill those minutes, while the freshmen seemed a bit more tentative, at least at first.
Notable: The Ducks were just 9-of-35 from the three-point line, and committed 15 turnovers. "Two of the areas we pride ourselves in," Graves said, "we didn't do a very good job." …. Freshman post Lucy Cochrane also made her collegiate debut, finishing with one assist and one foul in 7:18 of playing time. … The Ducks did have 26 assists on their 34 made baskets, and forced 21 turnovers with help from 13 steals.
Up Next: The Ducks remain at home to host Utah State on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
