Hebard, Ionescu Lead Ducks Past Texas Southern
11/16/19 | Women's Basketball
EUGENE, Ore. – Ruthy Hebard dominated inside and Sabrina Ionescu extended her NCAA all-time triple-doubles record to lead the No. 1 ranked Oregon women's basketball team to a 99-63 win over Texas Southern on Saturday afternoon in front of 9,159 fans in Matthew Knight Arena.
Hebard went 14-of-18 from the floor for a game-high 31 points while adding 13 rebounds for her third straight double-double to open the season, and Ionescu recorded the 19th triple-double of her career – and first this year – with 10 points, 13 rebounds and 14 assists.

The top-ranked Ducks (3-0) completed an unbeaten stretch of four games in eight days, including last Saturday's historic exhibition win over the USA Women's National Team, to kick off the 2019-20 season.
How it Happened: The Ducks raced out to a 10-0 lead to open the game, with Hebard scoring back-to-back buckets before six straight points from Erin Boley. Texas Southern (1-1) got within 14-8 with three minutes left in the first, but Oregon went on an 8-0 run – capped by a Taylor Chavez three pointer – and took a 24-10 lead into the second quarter. Hebard finished the opening period with 11 of the Ducks' 24 points.
A trio of three pointers from Jaz Shelley, Ionescu and Holly Winterburn – as well as back-to-back buckets inside by Lydia Giomi – helped push Oregon's lead to 39-12 through the first three minutes of the second quarter. Hebard scored eight points in a 10-2 UO run to make it 50-18, and Ionescu found Morgan Yaeger for a fastbreak lay-up with eight seconds left in the half. Oregon led 52-21 at halftime after Texas Southern hit a half-court shot at the buzzer.
Ionescu had five points, 11 rebounds and seven assists going into the third quarter, and she assisted on Oregon's first four baskets of the second half to notch her 40th career double-double. Needing just five points, Ionescu drilled a three pointer from the wing to make it 63-31 and added a pair of free throws a minute later, giving her a triple-double just five minutes into the third quarter.

Winterburn scored five points to fuel a 10-0 Oregon run that made it 81-36 with just over a minute left in the quarter, and freshman Lucy Cochrane fought through contact and beat the buzzer with a lay-in to send Oregon into the final period with an 85-41 advantage.
It was far from a flawless night though, as the Ducks scuffled in the fourth quarter with Ionescu and Hebard on the bench. Chavez drilled a pair of threes to open the fourth and give Oregon its biggest lead of the night, 91-41, but Texas Southern finished the game on a 22-8 run. Cochrane had a productive final period with four points, five rebounds and a blocked shot.

Who Stood Out: Hebard continued to dominate with the 42nd double-double of her career, and she is now averaging 23.7 points and 13.3 rebounds through the first three games of her senior season. Ionescu took on more of a facilitator role against Texas Southern, attempting only six shots, and she is averaging a triple-double through three games with 12.7 points, 10.0 rebounds and 10.7 assists.
Chavez finished with 11 points while going 4-of-4 from the floor, Giomi added 10 points with seven rebounds, and both Boley and Winterburn contributed nine points. Minyon Moore was just 1-of-7 from the floor, but the guard continued to push the pace at the point with seven assists. As a team, Oregon assisted on 29 of its 40 made field goals.
Notable: Hebard recorded the third 30-point game of her career, matching Ionescu for the most on the team … Ionescu extended her double-figure scoring streak to 74 straight games with the 105th of her career, and Hebard added her 97th … Hebard also notched the 47th double-figure rebounding game of her career, while Ionescu finished with double-digit assists for the 31st time … Ionescu is now tied for sixth in Oregon history with 40 career double-doubles … Chavez, who had a career-high 25 points on Wednesday, scored in double figures in back-to-back games for the first time in her career … Chavez started her third straight game in place of Satou Sabally, who is overseas this week playing for the German women's national team.

Up Next: The Ducks will hit the road for the first time this season next weekend for a Nov. 24 showdown against No. 20 Syracuse in New York. Oregon will then continue on to the U.S. Virgin Islands to play Oklahoma State, UT Arlington and No. 9 Louisville at the Paradise Jam (Nov. 28-30).
