Ducks Down UT Arlington, 91-54
11/29/19 | Women's Basketball
ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands – The top-ranked Oregon women's basketball team overcame a slow start in the first quarter to run away from UT Arlington for a 91-54 win in the Ducks' second game of the Paradise Jam on Friday at the University of the Virgin Islands.
A day after Oregon's starting five combined for 82 of the team's 89 points against Oklahoma State, sophomore Taylor Chavez provided a spark off the bench with 17 points and junior Lydia Giomi grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Satou Sabally caught fire in the third quarter to finish with a team-high 19 points, and Ruthy Hebard added 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting.
The Ducks (6-0) picked up their second win in as many days at the Paradise Jam and now get set for a tough battle against No. 8 Louisville on Saturday in the tournament finale.
"Louisville is so physical and aggressive and confident," said head coach Kelly Graves. "They're super athletic. The good thing is you look at our minutes tonight and we were able to rest a lot of players, so there's going to be no excuse tomorrow. We're going to come fully ready and we're going to have to play far better than we've played up until now; this will be the best team that we've faced."
How it Happened: The Ducks struggled to get things going early on, going just 2-of-8 from the floor and getting beat 9-to-4 on the glass as UT Arlington took a 10-9 lead through the first six minutes. But a midrange jumper by Sabrina Ionescu gave Oregon a 13-12 lead and ignited a 9-0 UO run to close the quarter, with Chavez hitting a three off the bench to help get the offense going.
The Ducks kept their foot on the gas to open the second quarter, extending their run to 24-3 behind eight more points from Chavez. Three-pointers by Erin Boley, Minyon Moore and Chavez pushed Oregon's lead to 44-19 with three minutes left in the half, and Hebard added a pair of lay-ins late to give the Ducks a 26-point lead at the break.
"The main thing that got us going was our defense," said Graves. "I thought our defense was great. This is a team that does not turn the ball over and we forced 15 turnovers in that first half, and most of them led to good looks at the other end. It was a good effort."
UT Arlington (4-2) cut Oregon's lead to 20 to open the third quarter before Sabally got going with seven points in a row. Three-point baskets by Chavez and freshman Jaz Shelley made it a 31-point lead at the 2:55 mark, and Sabally scored six straight points in the paint over the final two minutes to give UO a 75-41 advantage going to the fourth.
Oregon's starting five combined to play just five minutes in the fourth quarter as Graves got his bench some extended action. Giomi shined over the final 10 minutes with six points and five rebounds, Shelley added four more points and freshman Holly Winterburn got a bucket on a nifty finish around the rim as the Ducks finished out their sixth straight win to open the season.
Who Stood Out: Sabally scored 13 of her team-high 19 points in the third quarter on 5-of-6 shooting, and Chavez went 5-of-9 from three-point range for her third double-digit scoring game of the season. Hebard had 16 points and five rebounds, Moore and Boley finished with nine and eight points, respectively, and Shelley added seven points. Giomi had six points to go with her eight rebounds, with three of them coming on the offensive end.
Ionescu was on triple-double watch as usual with a team-high 10 assists and seven rebounds, but she saw an impressive streak come to an end after finishing with seven points. Entering the night, Ionescu had scored in double digits in 76 straight games dating back to the fifth game of her sophomore season.
Notable: Hebard saw her impressive double-double streak end at five games to open the season … With 282 in her career, Ionescu is now two three-pointers away from breaking the UO all-time record … Ionescu (2,066) moved past Bev Smith (2,063, 1978-82) for No. 3 on the Oregon all-time scoring list … Hebard passed Smith for No. 4 in UO history with her 100th career double-figure scoring game … Oregon scored 29 points off 20 total turnovers, and outscored UT Arlington 42-20 in the paint ... The Ducks are off to a 6-0 start for the second straight season.
Up Next: The No. 1 Ducks will close out the Paradise Jam with a top-10 showdown against No. 8 Louisville at 12:15 p.m PT on Saturday (FloHoops).
