Ducks Rally for Two Wins at ITA Nationals
11/06/19 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – Sophomore Joshua Charlton was part of two three-set rallies Wednesday on day one of the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Newport Beach, Calif. In singles play, he bested his fourth ranked opponent of the season with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 29 Gabriel Decamps of UCF. In doubles, he and Ty Gentry posted a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(4) victory over Sean Sculley and Nick Stachowiak of Duke.
The result marked the 62nd doubles win of Gentry's career, which moves the UO senior on the program's top-10 list.
Charlton moves on to the second round of the national tournament where he'll face eighth-ranked and No. 4 seed Daniel Cukierman of USC. The all-Pac-12 matchup will go on court Thursday at 11 a.m. (PT). Charlton and Gentry advance to play Payton Holden and Ryan Seggerman, the No. 15-ranked duo from Princeton.
Down a set and early break in the second, Charlton responded with a pair of breaks—one to give him a 5-3 lead—to even the match. Both players held their serve through the first eight games of the decisive third set but with the score tied at 4-all, Charlton broke Decamps' serve and then held to secure the win.
With Wednesday's win, Charlton improves to 10-3 this fall. After a run through qualifying to advance to the ITA All-American main draw, Charlton was a quarterfinalist at the ITA Northwest Regional. Decamps was the UCF No. 1 during the 2019 spring dual season.
The Ducks' pair used a late break in the second set to take a 5-4 advantage and then served out the set to force a decisive third-set breaker. Oregon jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the race to 10 and clinched the match on a Duke return error.
Charlton and Gentry, the ITA Northwest Regional doubles champions, improve to 7-1 this fall. The Duke pair of Sculley and Stachowiak qualified for the event as semifinalist at the ITA All-American in October.
