Ducks Earn Historic Win at No. 5 Michigan
12/14/19 | Men's Basketball
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Payton Pritchard scored 15 of the Ducks' final 17 points to lead No. 10 Oregon to a 71-70 overtime win at No. 5 Michigan Saturday afternoon at the Crisler Center.
The fifth-ranked Wolverines (8-3) are the highest ranked non-conference opponent that Oregon (8-2) has ever defeated during the regular season. The Ducks' previous best for a ranked non-conference opponent was a win over No. 10 Providence, 86-73, in Eugene on Jan. 4, 1975.
Michigan is the third top-15 team that the Ducks have defeated this season.
"I thought it was a real high-intensity game." Said Oregon coach Dana Altman. "Guys fought it off and did just enough to win."
Pritchard scored 23 points, while Anthony Mathis added 19 and Chris Duarte had 11.
How it Happened: Neither team led by more than three points the over the final 9:40 second half and overtime in a riveting game that lived up to every minute of the two teams' 2017 NCAA Sweet Sixteen classic.
After Michigan took a 51-48 lead on a three-pointer by Franz Wagner with 7:46 to play, the Ducks responded with a lay-in from C.J. Walker and a free throw by Anthony Mathis to tie the game at 51-51 with 6:07 to play.
The Wolverines retook the lead on a pair of free throws by Jon Teske before Mathis drained his sixth three-pointer of the game to push the Ducks back in front, 54-53, with 5:02 to play. Teske then dropped in an ally-oop before Pritchard took over for Oregon, scoring the Ducks' final nine points in regulation as the teams went back-and-forth on the way to a 63-63 tie at the end of regulation.
A Mathis three-pointer that would have won the game for the Ducks at the buzzer left his hand just after the final horn sounded and was waived off.
Michigan struck first with a three-pointer in overtime for a 66-63 edge. Pritchard countered with a pair of driving layups before Wagner gave Michigan its final lead, 68-67, with 3:27 to play.
Pritchard found Francis Okoro for an ally-oop that gave Oregon the lead for good, 69-68, with 3:09 to go. Pritchard then closed out the scoring for the Ducks with a bucket with 1:14 to play and Oregon's defense held on for one of the biggest wins in program history.
In the first half, after Michigan opened the game by hitting a three-pointer, Oregon went on a 15-2 run, thanks to a pair of threes by Mathis and five points from Duarte, to give the Ducks a 15-5 lead at the 14:27 mark.
Mathis' three-pointer with 7:07 left gave the Ducks their largest lead of the first half, 25-9. Michigan responded from its largest deficit of the season with a 14-0 run to close within 29-23 with 1:52 to go.
Pritchard finally ended the Wolverines' run with a long two-pointer with :38 left that gave the Ducks a 31-23 halftime lead.
Mathis had 12 points in the first half on four-of-six three-point shooting, while Duarte had seven points.
Who Stood Out: First half shooting and defense. The Ducks hit 50 percent from downtown (5-of-10), while holding the Wolverines to 24.1 percent from the field overall (7-of-29). For the game the Ducks were 8-of-16 on three-pointers and 27-of 53 (50.9 percent) overall.
Notable: Pritchard passed Kenya Wilkins (1,488/1993-97) for 14th in UO career scoring. Pritchard now has 1,495 career points.
