Ducks Win Behind Shelley's Barrage
12/16/19 | Women's Basketball
UO freshman Jaz Shelley made a team-record 10 three-pointers Monday vs. UC Riverside, and Sabrina Ionescu recorded her 20th career triple-double.
EUGENE, Ore. — The 20th career triple-double by UO senior Sabrina Ionescu was somehow upstaged Monday afternoon, when freshman guard Jaz Shelley made a program-record 10 three-pointers in No. 3 Oregon's 84-41 victory over UC Riverside before a boisterous young crowd of 11,705 fans on "Field Trip Day" in Matthew Knight Arena.
With junior Satou Sabally sitting out, Shelley made her first career start and finished with 32 points on 10-of-16 shooting. She was 10-of-14 from three-point range, breaking the previous program record of nine made three-pointers in a single game — set by three players, most recently UO junior Erin Boley in January of this year.
"It's not often," UO coach Kelly Graves said, "that you can overshadow a triple-double of 16 points, 18 rebounds and 12 assists."
How It Happened: The Ducks (9-1) took to their home court two days after a win on the road at Long Beach State, and playing without their star wing Sabally, who was given the day off being "a little banged up," Graves said. All of that plus an early start time may have contributed to a somewhat slow start offensively for Oregon, which led 17-9 after the first quarter.
"We had our ups and downs," Ionescu said. "With Satou out, we just had to get used to the lineup — but Jaz fit in quite well. Once we got our legs under us, and stopped hearing all those kids screaming, we were able to get in a rhythm."
Senior Ruthy Hebard got the Ducks going early in the second quarter, scoring on three straight trips for a 25-13 lead. Shelley's second three-pointer of the day made it 30-16, and a reverse layin by fellow freshman Holly Winterburn gave Oregon a 38-22 lead entering halftime.

Hebard scored on back-to-back possessions early in the third quarter to put the Ducks up 44-24, and that's when Shelley took over. She made five three-pointers in the third quarter alone, wrapping up the ridiculous outburst with a buzzer beater to close the period.
Entering the final quarter, Ionescu needed one assist to extend her own NCAA record for triple-double. She got it early in the period, collecting a defensive rebound and pushing the pace for a fastbreak opportunity that Taylor Chavez finished. Two possessions later, Ionescu fed Shelley for her seventh three-pointer, and the freshman wing made three more in the quarter to set the UO single-game record of 10.
"She puts in a lot of work," Ionescu said of Shelley, "and with that comes rewards."

Who Stood Out: Shelley's 32 points were a career high, and the most by any player on the UO roster so far this season. Ionescu's 18 rebounds also were a career high, on her way to the 20th triple-double of her career. Hebard also finished in double figures with 12 points, though the Ducks' all-time leader in field-goal percentage had to fight to get to the rim, finishing the game 6-of-13. Winterburn added nine points and fellow freshman Lucy Cochrane contributed career highs of five rebounds and three assists plus a blocked shot in her most extensive action of the season.
What It Means: Winning without Sabally, and doing so in dominant fashion, was a welcome sight, and Shelley continues to cement her status as a key member of the rotation with Pac-12 play approaching. With one nonconference game and one exhibition left before conference play starts, Graves said the Ducks are still tinkering with defensive looks to find the right fit for this group, and he said he'd like to see "more flow" offensively, even though Oregon is the nation's highest-scoring offense. "We have a high bar," Graves said. "We want to set a higher bar than that."

Notable: Prior to the game, Ionescu and Hebard with presented with souvenir basketballs to commemorate recently passing 2,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds, respectively. … Ionescu now has 849 career rebounds, ninth in UO history. … While the game was being played, the Pac-12 Conference announced that Ionescu had been named conference player of the week after having 21 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists against Long Beach State.
Up Next: The Ducks remain at home to host Kansas State on Saturday at noon.
