CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Oregon softball team finished its weekend at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational with a 2-2 record after falling to No. 18 Kentucky, 12-3, in five innings on Saturday at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex.
The No. 19 Ducks (7-2) picked up their second win of the weekend behind a no-hitter from sophomore Jordan Dail against Florida Atlantic earlier in the day, but struggled to get things going against the Wildcats (5-5) in their final game in Clearwater.
How it Happened: Oregon threatened in the opening inning after a two-out walk and a single by April Utecht, but a strikeout kept the Ducks off the board. Kentucky scored two runs on a pair of walks and a two-run double in the first before Dail took over in the circle and got the Ducks out of the inning. Dail worked out of trouble in the second, but the Wildcats added three runs in both the third and fourth innings to make it 8-0.
The Ducks got their bats going in the top of the fifth, with senior Cherish Burks leading off with a single and moving to third on a pair of wild pitches. Haley Cruse gave Oregon its first run with an RBI single down the left, and freshman Rachel Cid drove in two more with a two-run double into the right-center field gap. Kentucky threw out a runner at the plate on another Utecht single to keep Oregon from getting within four.
The Wildcats scored three on a pair of home runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the win.
At the Plate: Utecht and Burks both finished with two hits, and Cruse, Cid and Allee Bunker each had one. Cid's two RBIs gave her a team-high 14 for the season, and Cruse drove in her fourth run.
In the Circle: Maddie MacGrandle (2-2) made the start and allowed six runs over 1.1 innings with a strikeout, re-entering for Dail in the fifth. Dail struck out three with six runs allowed over three innings of relief after throwing a complete-game no-hitter earlier in the day.
What it Means: The new-look Ducks came away with two big wins while playing three ranked teams over four games in a loaded tournament hosted by ESPN. Oregon picked up its biggest win of the Melyssa Lombardi era on Friday over No. 8 LSU, and will take a 7-2 overall record into next week's Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Up Next: Oregon will play six games over four days next weekend in Cathedral City, Calif., beginning Thursday against New Mexico State and Bethune-Cookman.
