Ducks Drop Game Three at No. 8 Texas Tech
02/17/19 | Baseball
LUBBOCK, Texas – Oregon fell to 1-2 on the season despite another solid offensive effort, falling 6-4 at No. 8 Texas Tech. The Ducks jumped out to a 4-1 lead and collected 13 hits in the game, but the Red Raiders would score twice in the sixth and seventh and did not relinquish the lead.
The Ducks were again aggressive on the basepaths, recording their second game of five-plus stolen bases in the series and the first two since the 2015 season, when Oregon stole eight against Canisius on May 30, 2015.
How it Happened: Texas Tech (2-1) led off the seventh with a pair of walks against Ducks' reliever Robert Ahlstrom (1-1), who had recorded the final two outs in the sixth. After a double-steal, Red Raider third baseman Josh Jung hit an RBI single to left to give TTU the lead, followed by a sacrifice fly that extended the lead to 6-4.
Right-handed pitcher Peyton Fuller then entered the game, and after walking designated hitter Doug Facendo, he coaxed a ground out from Dylan Neuse and then struck out Tanner O'Tremba to end the threat, stranding runners on second and third.
Texas Tech closer John McMillon earned the save with a perfect ninth, striking out two of the three Oregon hitters he faced.
The Ducks (1-2) led off in the scoring in the second inning thanks to the hustle of Jakob Goldfarb, who scored all the way from second on an infield single by Vinny Tosti. The Ducks scored in similar fashion in the third, when Sam Novitske scored from second on a single up the middle by Gabe Matthews that was fielded by Texas Tech second baseman Brian Klein to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead.
Oregon starter Cullen Kafka had a no-hitter through two outs in the fourth, when left fielder Dylan Neuse ripped an RBI triple down the right-field line. The Ducks would answer in the top of the fifth, when Spencer Steer's RBI single drove in Jonny DeLuca, who started the inning with a double to left-center. Oregon would strand two runners in the inning after taking the 4-1 lead.
TTU third baseman Josh Jung's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth would narrow the lead to 4-2, but Kafka worked out of trouble and stranded two Red Raiders when fourth-place hitter Klein grounded out to Ducks' first baseman Gabe Matthews. The Ducks singled twice in the sixth, but Max Foxcroft was caught stealing third and Novitske was picked off first by catcher Braxton Fulford to end the inning.
Texas Tech would tie the score in the seventh on a two-run home run by O'Tremba, ending the day for Kafka after 5.1 innings (6 hits, 4 runs, all earned, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts).
DeLuca led off the seventh by lining a ball off of the left-field wall but was called out for oversliding the bag at third base.
Box Score Notes: Seven of the nine Ducks started collected at least one hit today … Kafka and TTU starter Mason Montgomery combined to retire the first eight hitters of the game before Goldfarb's second-inning double, his first hit of the season … Goldfarb finished with three hits in this first game this season, while DeLuca went 3-for-5 with a double, triple, one run scored, and a tremendous catch to rob a home run … Despite a 13-hit effort, the Ducks did not have a runner advance past second base after the fifth inning … Walks were again an issue, as Oregon pitchers issued seven after a 10-walk outing in Saturday's game.
Notable: The Ducks' 42 hits in the last three games are the most in a three-game stretch since they had 45 in three games against Arizona State in 2013 … Oregon has had 10 hits in three straight games for the first time since 2017 against BYU and UC Irvine twice … DeLuca turned in his second straight three-hit game after having none last year as a freshman … Kafka's 5.1 innings pitched matched a career-high (March 5, 2018 vs. FAU) … Four different Ducks have now had a three-hit game in the series after Goldfarb's three-hit day (Jonny DeLuca – twice, Tanner Smith, Aaron Zavala – twice) … Tosti became the fifth true freshman to start a game … Eight true freshman have played this weekend, with Keaton Chase and Tosti making their collegiate debuts today.
On Deck: Oregon concludes its season-opening, four-game series at Texas Tech tomorrow (Monday, Feb. 18) with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. PT.
