Ducks' Hot Start Not Enough at UCLA
02/23/19 | Men's Basketball
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Oregon men's basketball team watched Jaylen Hands have a Buddy Hield-esque night as the Bruin guard made shot after shot with Duck defenders all over him, leading UCLA to a 90-83 comeback win in front of 10,588 fans Saturday night at Pauley Pavilion.
Hand made seven three-pointers in the second half and finished with 27 points for the Bruins (15-13, 8-7).
"It was kind of like our entire season," said Duck guard Payton Pritchard. "Hot and cold."
Duck fans are still haunted by Hield, who scored 37 points against Oregon in a 2016 NCAA Elite Eight game against Oklahoma.
How it Happened: Oregon played one of its best first halves of the season, scoring 44 points and hitting 8-of-13 three-pointers.
Paul White hit a pair of three-pointers and Payton Pritchard added another as Oregon jumped out to an 11-2 lead to open the game. A flagrant foul on Francis Okoro stalled the Ducks' momentum and the Bruins eventually tied the game at 15-15 with 13:27 to go in the half.
The teams traded buckets for a tie at 17-17 before Victor Bailey Jr. and White keyed a 16-5 run with a pair of threes each to give the Ducks a 33-22 lead with 7:07 left.
The Ducks (15-12, 6-8) closed out the half on an 11-6 run for a 44-28 edge at the break. It was Oregon's largest halftime lead in a Pac-12 game this season.
After Payton Pritchard opened the second half with a three-pointer to give Oregon its biggest lead, 47-28, UCLA went on a 27-6 run, including 17-straight by the Bruins at one point, to take a 55-53 lead with 10:36 to play.
Oregon tied the game one last time, 62-62 on a pair of Kenny Wooten free throws with 7:45 left, but ULCA scored the next six points and went on to the victory from there.
Who Stood Out: Paul White had 18 points, tying a career high with four three-pointers. Payton Pritchard also had 18 points. Kenny Wooten scored 16 points with nine rebounds. Victor Bailey Jr. came off the bench to score 13 points, while Louis King added 10.
Notable: With eight assists, Payton Pritchard passed Luke Jackson (424/2000-04) for sixth in UO career assists. Pritchard finished the game with 429 assists … The Ducks used their eighth different starting lineup on Saturday, opening with Louis King, Payton Pritchard, Paul White, Kenny Wooten and Francis Okoro.
Quotable:
Dana Altman, Head Coach
"I'm really disappointed for the guys. They were ready to go and played hard."
Up Next: Oregon returns to Matthew Knight Arena to host Arizona State on Thursday (8 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
