EUGENE, Ore. – Sophomore Shaye Bowden has been named the Pac-12 player of the week after hitting .412 to lead the Oregon softball team to a 4-2 showing at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic over the weekend, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Bowden went 7-for-17 with a home run, double and seven RBIs over Oregon's six games, including a two-hit, three-RBI performance in the Ducks' 7-5 comeback win over Texas A&M. The Phoenix, Ariz., native gave Oregon a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run double and then drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning.
Bowden also hit her second home run of the year against New Mexico State to open the weekend, and finished the MNCC by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs in a 6-1 win over UCSB. The sophomore leads the Ducks and ranks sixth in the Pac-12 this season with a .409 batting average, and she is tied for ninth with 14 RBIs.
The Ducks' super-utility player also continued to thrive in her new role at catcher, throwing out three more runners trying to steal over the weekend. Bowden leads the Pac-12 in runners caught stealing this season with six despite playing only nine games behind the plate.
This is Bowden's first career Pac-12 weekly honor and the second of the year for the Ducks. Rachel Cid was named the Pac-12 freshman of the week after shining at the Kajikawa Classic to open the season.
Oregon, which moved to No. 20 in the latest USA Today/NFCA poll, will head to the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif., this week to face No. 3 Florida, Cal State Fullerton, No. 22 Auburn, Michigan and No. 7 Tennessee.
