Ducks Head for Midwest

EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon women's tennis team travels to the Prairie State where it will face Illinois-Chicago on Friday, Feb. 8 and Illinois on Sunday, Feb. 10.

This is the first time in program history that the Ducks will face either of these Illinois-based programs.

LAST TIME OUT
The Ducks executed a 2-0 weekend at home, defeating Saint Mary's, 5-2, on Feb. 1 and Fresno State, 4-1, on Feb. 3.

In the match against Saint Mary's, Oregon clinched the doubles point after winning at the number one and two spots.

The Gaels came out strong in singles play, opening with a win at the number six spot, to tie things up, 1-1. But the Ducks found their rhythm and would win the next four matches.

Senior Shweta Sangwan completed the comeback to clinch the match for the Ducks in a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win.

The Ducks continued to roll in their second match of the weekend against Fresno State. In doubles, the Ducks, again, won at the number one and two spots to gain a 1-0 edge heading into singles play.

During singles play, Paiton Wagner and Rifanty Kahfiani both dominated, each winning in straight sets.

The match came down to Daniela Nasser in the number-two spot, fighting her way to a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win to secure the victory for the Ducks.

RECORD SETTING SENIORS
Shweta Sangwan's three-set win over Mariia Kozyreva of Saint Mary's was her 59th win in an Oregon uniform. Daniela Nasser also reached 59 career wins after defeating Deniza Marcinkevica of Fresno State, on Feb. 3. With 59 wins under each of their belts, both seniors tie Lindsay Bartlett (1981-84) for the ninth most wins in program history.

Sangwan and Nasser need two more wins to tie Kumi Nagamoto (1987-90) for No. 8 on UO's career win list with 61. They are also six wins behind head coach Courtney Nagle who currently has the seveth-most career wins in UO history with 65.

IN THE RANKINGS
After the first three weeks of spring season, both Shweta Sangwan and Daniela Nasser remained among the top players in the Nation. Shweta Sangwan came away from spring
season ranked as the No. 81 singles player by the ITA and now sits at No. 55. Fellow senior Dani Nasser is now tied for 72nd after previously being ranked 50th.

WELCOME TO THE TEAM, TARYN
On Jan. 17, the Oregon women's tennis team welcomed walk-on freshman Taryn Fujimori to the squad.

Prior to joining the varsity roster, Fujimori was a member of Oregon's club tennis team. Fujimori also played tennis for the same high school that former Duck Alyssa Tobita (2014-18) attended, Mililani High School.

HEAD COACH COURTNEY NAGLE
Oregon athletics director Rob Mullens announced Courtney Nagle as the Ducks' women's tennis head coach on July 20, 2018. Nagle was a four-year letterwinner at Oregon (2002-05) and a former volunteer assistant for the Ducks in 2005 and 2010. She spent the last four seasons as the top assistant for a highly successful North Carolina program, helping lead the Tar Heels to a 122-12 dual match record, three ACC titles and two Intercollegiate Tennis Association national championships. Long considered one of the top assistants in the nation, Nagle was named the assistant coach of the year in 2017 by the ITA.
