Ducks Beat Louisville, Stay Perfect at Home
02/09/19 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Oregon men's tennis team used a hard-fought doubles point to propel itself to a 6-1 win over Louisville Saturday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center. The Ducks are now 8-1 this season and remain undefeated on their home courts.
Â
Up Next: Oregon will close out its home stand Feb. 17 at 11 a.m. (PT) against Loyola Marymount.
Â
In doubles play, Oregon and Louisville (6-3) split courts two and three and all attention turned to court one where the visitors had a 5-4 advantage. However, the No. 42 team of Charles Roberts and Armando Soermarno rattled off the final three games to win the match—including two match points saved—and secured the opening point.
Â
"We were down and I told Charles 'you have a big serve, use it and I'll try to get to everything I can up (at the net)," Soemarno said. "He did exactly what we talked about. It's like the pressure is on both teams in those situations."
Â
Senior Thomas Laurent was the first Duck on the scoreboard with his 6-2, 6-1 win on court one. With the victory, he improved to 15-3 overall this season with five-straight wins. Laurent also becomes the third player in program history to reach 90 career wins, joining Jayson Amos (2013-17) and Robin Cambier (2010-14) on that short list.
Â
Joshua Charlton won his seventh-consecutive match—6-1, 6-4 on court five—to push the Ducks to a 3-0 match lead. Roberts picked up his second win of the day, a three-set triumph on court six, to clinch the team's win.
Â
With the victory in hand, play continued with Oregon winning two of the last three matches on court. Ty Gentry posted his ninth-straight with a 7-6(6), 6-2 decision. In the last match on court, No. 80 Emmanuel Coste picked up a win over Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff on court two. The Cardinals' No. 2 played in last year's NCAA Singles Championship.
