Hull, Thomas Earn Regional Accolades
03/01/19 | Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. – In recognition of their standout indoor campaigns, senior Jessica Hull and associate head coach Ben Thomas have collected USTFCCCA regional awards as announced Friday. Hull has been named the West Region Women's Track Athlete of the Year while Thomas is the West Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year.
The Ducks are set to cap the 2019 indoor season next weekend at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The two-day meet will be held March 8-9 at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.
Hull is the fifth Oregon woman to win this award while Thomas' selection marks the third time in the past five years an Oregon coach has won this award.
In back-to-back outings earlier this indoor season, Hull broke the school records in the mile and at 3,000 meters. She bettered her own mark in the mile with a 4:31.03 performance at the Razorback Invitational (Jan. 26). Hull followed with a time of 8:53.91 at the Husky Classic (Feb. 8) to take down the previous UO record at 3,000 meters held by Jordan Hasay.
Both times rank second nationally with her 3K effort going down as the No. 13 all-conditions indoor time in NCAA history. At the MPSF Championships, Hull anchored the Ducks' distance-medley relay to victory in a time of 10:57.87 which clinched an NCAA spot. She was joined on that DMR by Taylor Chiotti, Susan Ejore and Makenzie Dunmore.
Hull will be making her second appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships, having previously placed third at 3,000 meters in 2018. She and Ejore were also part of last year's NCAA champion DMR team.
Thomas, in his first season at Oregon, will send five of his charges to the national meet with three in the mile and two at 3,000 meters. During the indoor season, he coached six Ducks to sub-4:00 mile times all of which were ranked within the top 35 nationally in the event.
Charlie Hunter – 3:57.74 (No. 8 in UO history)
James West – 3:57.75 (No. 9 in UO history)
Reed Brown – 3:58.22
Blake Haney – 3:58.73
Cooper Teare – 3:59.21
Jackson Mestler – 3:59.77
The Men of Oregon distance crew will be represented at the NCAA Championships by Hunter, Brown and Haney in the mile and Teare and West at 3,000 meters. Teare's 3K time of 7:50.66 from the Husky Classic (Feb. 8) put him No. 7 on the program's all-time list. West checks in at No. 9 with his 7:51.18 at the MPSF Championships (Feb. 23).
