Second Straight Comeback Gives Ducks Series Win
03/10/19 | Baseball
Aaron Zavala tied the game in the top of the ninth with a two-run double and Tanner Smith drove in the winning run on a run-scoring single while Robert Ahlstrom shut out the Rainbow Warriors over the final two innings to get the win.
How it Happened: After Gabe Matthews led off the ninth with his fourth hit of the day on a single and Jakob Goldfarb followed with a double, Zavala scored pinch-runner Marco Young and Goldfarb with a two-RBI double to left field. Smith came up after Cameron Campbell sacrificed pinch-runner Evan Williams to third and ripped a single through the right side to drive in Williams and give Oregon the lead for good.
Ahlstrom (3-1), who started Thursday's game, came in out of the bullpen in the eighth inning and set Hawaii down in order, before striking out the side in the ninth to earn his third win.
Hawaii (8-8) struck first for the second straight day, scoring two runs in the first and one in the third. Max Crabbe drove in all three of those runs with a two-run single in the first inning and a two-out RBI single in the third.
Oregon (10-4) took the lead with a four-run fifth inning, making it 4-3. Aaron Zavala and Cameron Campbell both came in to score when Vinny Tosti reached on a fielder's choice, with Zavala coming in from third and Campbell scoring on an error on the play. One batter later, Sam Novitske scored Kyle Froemke with an RBI fielder's choice before Matthews put the Ducks in front with an RBI double.
Crabbe again came through for the Rainbow Warriors, driving in two more with a single fifth to put Hawaii back in front. Alex Baeza added to the lead in the sixth driving a two-run home run out to right field, making it 7-4.
Zavala drove in DeLuca with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to cut it to a 7-5 Hawaii lead.
Quotable: Head coach George Horton
On what back-to-back comeback wins says about the team…
"Hopefully it provides some confidence that we're capable of doing that. When you do something like that, there's a lot of reasons for it, and we had a lot of contributions. This feels really good because any time you can come here and beat a solid Hawaii team three out of four, you feel good about that going into conference play."
Box Score Notes: Oregon won a game that it trailed heading into the ninth inning for the first time since May 15, 2015 against Utah … Matthews matched a career-high with four hits, and is now batting .457 on the season … He finished the series 8-for-13 (.615) with three doubles … Zavala drove in a season-high three runs while turning in his third multi-RBI game … Novitske has reached base in all 14 games this season, and has gotten on multiple times in 12 games … Freshman Tyler Frazier made his first career appearance and worked a perfect seventh inning with two strikeouts.
On Deck: The Ducks will return to the mainland to play a non-conference game at Oregon State Tuesday at 6 p.m.
