CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon had the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the ninth inning, but couldn't complete a late-innings comeback for the third straight game in a 7-6 loss to No. 6 Oregon State at Goss Stadium Tuesday night.
How it Happened: Vinny Tosti made it a one-run game with one out in the ninth on a pinch-hit RBI single, scoring Jakob Goldfarb who led off with a double. After a fly out, Taylor Adams delivered a pinch-hit single to put runners on first and second, but a strikeout ended the game.
Oregon State (13-1-1) got on the board first, scoring two runs in the first inning. After a pair of walks by Oregon starter Kolby Somers, Beau Philip scored both with a two-run single to left, making it 2-0.
The Ducks (10-5) answered with two runs each in the second and third innings to jump in front, 4-2. Cameron Campbell put Oregon on the board in the second when he scored on a wild pitch after leading off with a walk. Sam Novitske followed with a run-scoring double, plating Max Foxcroft to tie the game. In the third, Gabe Matthews came in to score on a wild pitch after he led off with a single, and Foxcroft scored Goldfarb with an RBI single.
The Beavers reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs to make it 6-4. The first five batters of the inning reached base, including a pair of RBI singles, before a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch allowed the other two runs to come across.
The two teams traded single runs in the bottom of the fourth and top of the fifth, with Foxcroft delivering for the Ducks to pick up his second RBI of the day, making it 7-5.
Box Score Notes: Matthews finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks … He has reached in 11 of his last 14 plate appearances in the last three games and is 7-for-10 in that stretch … Goldfarb turned in his third three-hit game of the season, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored … He has reached base safely in his last seven plate appearances … Novitske has reached base with a hit/walk/HBP in 14 of 15 games, while getting aboard on an error in the other game … He has gotten on multiple times in 13 games … Christian Ciuffetelli threw two perfect innings of relief, striking out two … Hunter Breault, Jack Noble and Keaton Chase also gave the Ducks scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
On Deck: The Ducks open conference play Friday by hosting Washington at 6 p.m. at PK Park.
